Knight Hawks 46, Pirates 44
5/1/22 --
WORCESTER, MA - The Vegas Knight Hawks held the Massachusetts Pirates scoreless in the third quarter and were able to hold off the hosts today en route to a 46-44 win today at the DCU Center.
The win snapped a three-game skid for Vegas and raised their record to 3-4 on their expansion season. They also are now 1-1 in interconference play. The Pirates fell to 4-2 on the year and are now in second place in the Eastern Conference. This was the first-ever meeting between the teams, and the only time they will play each other this season.
Massachusetts took the opening kickoff and drove 47 yards don the field, capped by Alejandro Bennifield's three-yard bootleg around the right side. Jerod Evans tossed an eight-yard touchdown to a leaping Jordan McCray, but the extra point went wide right. The Pirates tacked on a 20-yard field goal from Craig Peterson to take a 10-6 lead with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter. The Knight Hawks came right back, scoring on a 14-yard catch-and-run touchdown from Evans to Elad Covaliu four minutes later. Vegas led 12-10 at the end of the opening quarter.
The Pirates responded when Bennifield found Johnathan Johnson all alone in the end zone for a 28-yard score. The Knight Hawks responded with a nine-yard scramble up the middle from Evans to take a 19-17 lead midway through the second quarter. The Pirates retook the lead a couple minutes later when Bennifield plunged in from a yard away. The Knight Hawks went back on top on Evans' second rushing touchdown of the game with 47 seconds to go. The Pirates countered on Deddrick Thomas' 11-yard run across the middle six seconds later. The Knight Hawks had the ball with a chance to put some more points on the board, but Evans was sacked and time ran out in the half. Massachusetts went into the break up 30-25.
It was all Knight Hawks in the third quarter. They took a 32-30 lead early when Elad Covaliu took a screen pass from Bennifield 19 yards across the field and into the end zone. Peterson attempted to give the Pirates the lead, but his 36-yard field goal try was no good, giving the Knight Hawks the ball back. They capitalized on their next drive with a four-yard strike from Evans to McCray in the back left corner of the end zone. Vegas led 39-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
Bennifield found Isaac Zico for a five-yard touchdown, and then hit Thomas Owens to pull the Pirates to within a point. Evans counted with a 15-yard scramble up the middle to extend the Knight Hawks' lead to 46-38 with 9:27 remaining. The Pirates came right back, scoring on a one-yard run from Bennifield. They attempted a two-point conversion, but Bennifield's pass was intercepted in the end zone by Mister Harriel.
Evans made his Knight Hawks debut after being signed earlier in the week. Wide receiver Frank Brown, who served as Vegas' emergency quarterback in a loss last week, went down with a leg injury and was carted off the field early in the second quarter. Brown came into the game as the Knight Hawks' leading receiver.
Evans threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more. McCray and Covaliu each caught two touchdowns for the Knight Hawks. Bennifield had two touchdown passes and three touchdown rushes Thomas rushed for a touchdown, and Zico and Johnson each had a touchdown reception for the Pirates.
The Pirates will visit the San Diego Strike Force on May 7 at 7:05 p.m. The Knight Hawks will be at home to host the Northern Arizona Wranglers on May 8 at 3:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
