SAN JOSE, CA - To say it was never in doubt may be an overstatement, but not too far from it.
The Northern Arizona Wranglers were relentless for four quarters as they headed into Northern California and handled the Bay Area Panthers on their way to a 65-34 win tonight at the SAP Center.
Northern Arizona improved to 4-2 on the season and rebounded to its 66-33 loss two weeks ago to remain in second place in the Western Conference. Bay Area fell to a league-worst 1-5 and are now riding a five-game losing streak. This was the second of three games between the teams this season. The Wranglers overwhelmed the Panthers, 49-20, at Prescott Valley on March 26. they will meet again on May 21, also in Prescott Valley.
Northern Arizona scored first on Israel Tucker's four-yard run. After getting the ball back, the Wranglers went up 14-0 on a 31-yard bomb from Kaleb Barker to Glen Gibbons. Bay Area got on the board on an impressive 45-yard run from Dre'Sonte Dorton. The Panthers' Nick Brassell picked off Barker in a wrestle for the ball. Bay Area capitalized with a long touchdown strike from Joe Newman to Kameron Pleasant. The game was knotted at 14-14 and the end of one.
The Wranglers came right back when Barker hit a streaking Quentin Randolph for a 35-yard score. Northern Arizona got the ball back and increased the lead to 28-14 with a four-yard run from Tucker. Mercardo Anderson picked off Newman and returned it to the four-yard line. The Wranglers wasted no time in scoring, this time on a four-yard touchdown from Barker to Randolph wide open in the left corner of the end zone. The Panthers countered with a 12-yard run from Duane Gary. Barker found a wide-open Gibbons in the middle of the end zone to double-up the Panthers at 42-21 with 23 second remaining in the half.
Bay Area was to receive the opening kickoff in the second half, but the kick went awry and was recovered by the Wranglers' Marquise Bridges. Stanley Williams scored on a two-yard run early in the third and Northern Arizona was up 49-21. The Panthers came right back with a 15-yard touchdown toss from Newman to Pleasant. The Wranglers answered with a one-yard run from Barker. Newman fumbled deep in Panthers territory, but fell on it in the end zone. That resulted in a safety. The Wranglers led 58-28 heading into the final quarter.
With the Wranglers driving, Barker was intercepted by Raysean Pringle of the Panthers who returned it to the house. Northern Arizona came right back, scoring on a seven-yard touchdown to Ulice Gillard and the Wranglers were up by 31 with 8:46 remaining. The Wranglers were able to run out the clock to preserve the win.
Barker threw for five touchdowns and ran for another. Tucker rushed for two scores and Williams added another. Randolph hauled in a pair of touchdowns. Gibbons and Gillard also caught touchdowns for the Wranglers. Newman threw for a pair of touchdowns -- both to Pleasant. Dorton and Gary each rushed for a score for the Panthers. Pringle's interception was his third in the last three games.
