The Iowa Barnstormers took advantage of a pair of early Quad City Steamwheelers miscues to record a 63-47 win tonight to move into third place in the Eastern Conference tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Barnstormers move to 4-3 on the season, and a perfect 3-0 at home. The Steamwheelers even their record at 4-4 and 2-2 at home. This was the second meeting between the teams this season. The Steamwheelers defeated the Barnstormers 46-24 on March 18. Iowa leads the overall series, 3-1 (2-0 home, 1-1 away).
Iowa's 63 points tonight was the most in nearly three years. They defeated the Bismarck Bucks, 65-35, on May 24, 2019.
Iowa received the opening kickoff and, on the first play, Darius-James Peterson was picked off by Kendell Jefferson of Quad City. The Steamwheelers drove to the 10 in Barnstormers' territory. On third down a mis-timed snap forced quarterback E.J. Hilliard to chase down the ball all the way back to their own 17, where they were forced to attempt a 48-yard field goal. The try was blocked and recovered by Jordan Baldwin in the end zone to put the Barnstormers up 7-0 with 11:04 left in the opening quarter. After Justic'e King intercepted Hilliard, the Barnstormers drove down and scored on a three-yard pass in the right corner of the end zone from Peterson to Kentrez Bell. The Steamwheelers responded immediately on a 43-yard toss from Hilliard to Londell Lee. The Barnstormers led 14-7 at the end of one.
The Barnstormers added to their lead early in the second on Peterson's 19-yard pass from Bell. After recovering the onside kick, Iowa scored once more when Peterson found Dom McNeil for a nine-yard touchdown in the left side of the end zone. Iowa's defense forced Kimo Naehu to attempt a 55-yard field goal. Alvin Bailey returned to short kick 57 yards down the right sideline to put the Barnstormers up 35-7 with 6:09 in the second. The Steamwheelers scored on a 25-yard field goal from Naehu. Iowa drove deep into Steamwheeler territory, but were unable to score before the quarter expired. The Barnstormers took a 35-10 lead into halftime.
Quad City scored on the first drive of the second half on Hilliard's one-yard play action run up the middle. Iowa answered on a four-yard bootleg from Peterson with 3:57 left in the third. The Steamwheelers came right back with a nine-yard touchdown run from Hilliard around the left sideline, and added a two-point conversion to make it a 17-point deficit with just over a minute to go in the third. Iowa had a 42-25 lead heading into the final quarter.
Iowa scored again on an eight yard pass from Peterson to Tyrell Pearson, but Quad City came back with a four-yard touchdown pass from Hilliard to Mike Carrigan. The two-point conversion was successful and the Steamwheelers were down 49-31 with just under 10 minutes left. The Steamwheelers' Jaylin Swan recovered the onside kick and Quad City was back in business on offense. The good-fortune was short lived when the Barnstormers' Baldwin picked off Hilliard and returned it for a touchdown. The Steamwheelers responded with a five-yard touchdown toss from Hilliard to Kerrion Moore. Hilliard dove for the two-point conversion to make it 56-39 midway through the final quarter. King recovered the Steamwheelers' onside kick attempt, giving the Barnstormers the ball at the Quad City eight-yard line. Antonio Wimbush's six-yard run put the Barnstormers up 63-39 with 5:49 remaining. The Steamwheelers came back on Hilliard's 11-yard touchdown, and added Kevan Rudd's end-around run for the two-point conversion.
Peterson threw for four touchdowns and ran for another. Bell had two of those scoring catches, while McNeil had one and Wimbush run for a score. The Barnstormers also scored on defense and on special teams. Hilliard tossed three touchdown passes and ran for three more. Lee, Carrigan and Moore each had touchdown catches.
