TUCSON, AZ - And, the mighty have fallen.
The Tucson Sugar Skulls stood toe-to-toe with the Arizona Rattlers and held off the last undefeated team in the IFL to emerge with a 72-63 win over the Rattlers. It is the first time in the three seasons which the Sugar Skulls have defeated their in-state partners, the Rattlers. Arizona head coach Kevin Guy is also part owner of the Sugar Skulls. The teams play once more; June 25 at Phoenix.
The Sugar Skulls improve to 4-3 on the season, while the Rattlers fall to 6-1. The Sugar Skulls' 74 points were the most they've scored in franchise history.
Arizona outgained Tucson in total offense, 318 yards to 212. That included a 208-152 advantage in the passing game and a 110-63 edge in the running game. The Rattlers were penalized 10 times for 134 yards, while the Sugar Skulls were flagged seven times for 70 yards. In a state that isn't always indicative of the outcome, Arizona had an edge in time of possession, 37:29 to 22:31.
Daquan Neal completed 12 of 15 passes for 152 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions for the Sugar Skulls. He also rushed for 26 yards and two more scores. Mike Jones had had 34 yards off 10 carries with two touchdowns. Quinten Pedroza and Arthur Jackson each caught four passes apiece for 65 and 32 yards, respectively. The duo also each had a pair of touchdown grabs. Carrington Thompson added three receptions for 31 yards and a score. Mike Minter led the Sugar Skulls defense with 10 tackles.
Drew Powell went 16 of 28 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed 10 times for 77 yards and four scores. Braxton Haley led all receivers with five catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for another touchdown. Jamal Miles finished with four grabs for 46 yards, and rushed for a touchdown. Saleem Brightwell's six tackles led the Rattler's defense.
