SAN JOSE, CA - The Duke City Gladiators opened up a 23-0 lead through the middle of the second quarter and never looked back in their 43-20 win tonight over the Bay Area Panthers at the SAP Center.
The Gladiators improved to 3-5 on the season and are in the hunt for the fourth seed in the Western Conference. The Panthers fall to 1-7 and find themselves on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoff picture. This is the first historical meeting between the teams and the only meeting scheduled this season.
Kevin Goessling's 25-yard field goal on the opening drive put the Gladiators on the board. They added to that midway through the first quarter with a four-yard run from Charles Reid. Duke City let 10-0 heading into the second quarter.
The Gladiators added to their lead early in the second on Ramone Atkins' seven-yard touchdown toss to Jared Elmore. They extended the lead to 23-0 when Atkins found Gregory Dent, Jr. for a 23-yard score. The Panthers got on the board when Joe Newman found Kameron Pleasant for an 18-yard touchdown. Duke City added a touchdown as time ran out in the quarter with a 10-yard pass from Atkins to Elmore. The Gladiators took a 30-7 lead into halftime.
The only scoring in the third quarter came on a 31-yard field goal from Goessling, which increased the lead to 33-7 which they would take into the fourth quarter.
Bay Area cut into the lead with a five-yard pass from Newman to Pleasant. Duke City came right back on Reid's 31 yard scoring run. Newman found Deondre Douglas for a 13-yard touchdown to make the score 40-20 with 10:35 remaining. Goessling's 27-yard field goal with 4:35 left provided the final margin of victory.
Atkins went 11 of 23 for 108 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Reid finished with 71 yards off eight carries and two touchdowns. Elmore had three catches for 37 yards and two scores, while Dello Davis caught four passes for 33 yards. Jayson Serda led the Gladiators' defense with nine tackles, while Jimmy Thomas had seven tackles of his own. Each also recorded a sack.
Newman finished eight of 18 for 71 yards with three scores and a pick. He also rushed for 37 yards. Douglas and Pleasant had 29 and 26 yards, respectively. Pleasant had a pair of touchdown grabs, while Douglas had one. Clayton Glasco led the Panthers' defense with six tackles. Jeffrey Allison and Karmah Yates each had a sack.
