Pirates 51, Strike Force 30

SAN DIEGO, CA -The Massachusetts Pirates Sailed into Southern California and grounded the San Diego Strike force to a halt, pulling away in the fourth quarter to register a 51-30 win over the San Diego Strike Force tonight at Pechanga Arena.
The Pirates move into a tie in the Eastern Conference standings with the Frisco Fighters at 5-2 overall. The Strike Force fall to 2-5 on the season with hopes of the playoffs receding. This is the first game between the teams and is the only game between the teams this season.
Massachusetts scored on the opening drive when Deddrick Thomas rushed in from three yards. As San Diego was driving, San Diego quarterback Steve Cluley was intercepted by Khalid Wooten giving the Pirates the ball back. The Pirates added to their lead when Alejandro Bennifield found Isaac Zico for a 20-yard score with 6:01 to go in the opening quarter. The Pirates led at the end of the opening quarter.
San Diego was forced into a long field goal, but the try resulted in a bad snap. It was recovered by new kicker Victor Leventritt who was touched in the back of the end zone, resulting in a safety. Following the safety, Bennifield was intercepted by Ishmael Adams to give the Strike Force the ball back at their own nine yard line. The Pirates responded with a nine-yard run from Thomas to go up 22-14 with 4:29 left. Leventritt's 44-yard field goal inside of the final minute narrowed the deficit for the Strike Force and the Pirates led 22-17 heading into the intermission.
Leventritt was true on a 43-yard field goal five minutes into the third quarter to pull the Strike Force to within three. Bennifield hit Thomas Owens for an 11-yard touchdown which gave Massachusetts a 29-20 lead heading into the final quarter.
Leventritt cut into the lead with a 25-yard field goal, but Bennifield's one-yard run and two-point conversation extended the Pirates' lead to 37-23 lead with a little over four minutes to go. Cluley's 21-yard touchdown toss to Marques Rodgers pulled the Strike Force to within a touchdown, but they Strike Force never got closer than that. Bennifield found Owens for an eight-yard score. The Strike Force drove, but Cluley was intercepted by Aarion-Maxey Penton. Bennifield's six-yard run lifted the Pirates to a 51-30 lead with four minutes remaining.
Bennifield finished with three passing touchdowns, and Owens caught a pair of them. Thomas rushed for a pair of touchdowns. For the Strike Force, Rodgers rushed for two touchdowns and caught another.
The Pirates will visit the Arizona Rattlers on May 14 in a rematch of last year's United Bowl. Kickoff in that one is set for 6:05 p.m. The Strike Force are at home on May 14 to face the Vegas Knight Hawks at 7:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time.
