5/13/22 --
GREEN BAY, WI - The Quad City Steamwheelers took advantage of a pair of second-half broken plays to pull past the Green Bay Blizzard tonight at the Resch Center, 48-30
Quad City was down at halftime, but dominated in the second half en route to improving their record to 4-3 on the season and improving their playoff positioning. The Blizzard fall to 3-6 on the year and will have to put together a run to get back in to the playoff picture.
The teams have met once already this season. Quad City took the first game, 49-31 in Illinois. They meet once more when the Blizzard visit the Steamwheelers on June 3. The Steamwheelers and the Blizzard are locked overall at 2-2 with each team going 1-1 at home.
The Blizzard consumed nearly half the first quarter on their opening drive, capping it with a three-yard run around the right side from Shaquon Curenton for three yards. After Green Bay's defense held the long missed field goal by the Steamwheelers' Kimo Naehu, the Blizzard scored on a 15-yard pass from Jack Sheehan to Keshaun Taylor. Quad City got on the board at the end of the quarter with a 24-yard touchdown to Mike Carrigan who was falling over the dasher board in the right side of the end zone. The Blizzard held a 13-7 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Hilliard found a wide-open Carrigan for a 37-yard touchdown to lift the Steamwheelers to a one-point lead midway through the second quarter. Nick Jaworski's 40-yard field goal put the Blizzard up 16-14. After a pair of missed long field goals by each team, that was the score heading into the intermission.
The third quarter started with some fireworks. Hilliard found Keyvan Rudd for a 35-yard bomb. The Blizzard came right back with a 10-yard touchdown from Sheehan to Curenton. On the Steamwheelers' next drive, from the 10-yard line, Hilliard rushed to the one, but fumbled before he was taken down and the fumble was recovered by Hunter Nobbs in the end zone for a touchdown. Quad City went into the final quarter with a 27-23 lead.
Green Bay was in the midst of driving when a bad snap was pulled from their center's hands and returned by Nathan Sheets of the Steamwheelers who returned it across the field for a 27-yard touchdown. Quad City forced a turnover on downs with a chance to throw the dagger. The Steamwheelers scored on a one-yard run from backup quarterback Aaron Aiken to go up 41-23 with 7:39 left. Sheehan was then picked off by Sheets to give the ball toe Quad City at the Blizzard 19.
Hilliard threw for three scores and rushed for another. Carrigan had two of those catches, and Rudd had the other, Aiken, who started the first few games of the season, used his 6'5" frame to power in for his touchdown for the Steamwheelers.
Sheehan, who is now 3-3 as a starter for the Blizzard, threw for three scores, Taylor caught a pair of those, while Curenton had the other, as well as a score on the ground.
The Steamwheelers will host the Bismarck Bucks on May 20 at 5:05 p.m. The Blizzard will be at home against the Iowa Barnstormers on May 20 at 5:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC Indoor Football League schedule.
