SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Frisco Fighters fought tooth-and-nail with the Sioux Falls Storm, but pulled away in the fourth quarter to move claim a 57-39 win tonight over the Storm at Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The Fighters improve to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 on the road. They still have five of their last eight games at home as they make their playoff run. The Storm fall to 4-4 and 3-2 at home, though still remain in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race. This was the first of two games between the teams. They face each other on July 16 when the Storm head to Texas to face the Fighters.
Frisco leads the overall series now, 2-0, winning once at home and once on the road.
Frisco got on the vard first when Justin Rankin scored from a yard out. The Fighters added to the lead with a 13-yard touchdown from Blake Sims to Sheldon Augustine with 3:15 remaining in the opening quarter. The Storm countered when Dalton Sneed found Donnie Corely for 13 yards. The Fighters led 13-7 at the end of one.
Sims hit Jerminic Smith for a 28-yard touchdown to up by two scores early in the second. Sneed's six-yard touchdown to Tim Keith made the score 20-13 four minutes into the quarter. The Storm tied it on Nate Chavious' five-yard run midway through the second quarter. Bryce Crawford gave the Fighters a 23-20 lead with a 43-yard field goal later in the quarter. Frisco led by that score at intermission.
Sioux Falls took the lead on a 53-yard kickoff return from Chavious to open the second half. The Fighters retook the lead on a one-yard run from Sims. Sawyer Petre pulled the Storm to within a point with a 23-yard field goal with 4:40 left in the quarter. Frisco countered on a 47-yard touchdown to Augustine. The Fighters led 37-29 going into the final period.
The Storm cut into the lead to 37-32 on a 23-yard field goal from Petre. The Fighters responded with a one-yard run from Rankin. The Strike Force responded with a two-yard touchdown toss from Sneed to Aaron Dilworth. Justin Rankin's 27-yard touchdown run put the Fighters up by 11, and T.J. Edwards rushed for a one-yard score to provide the final margin of victory.
Sims completed nine of 12 passes for 193 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Rankin rushed for three touchdowns and gained 52 yards on the ground. Augustine caught a pair of touchdown passes, in addition to his 113 yards off five receptions. Trey Wafford led the Fighters' defense with nine tackles, while Charles Williams had six tackles and a sack.
Sneed went 14 of 24 for 123 yards with three touchdowns. Dilworth caught a game-high nine balls and had 73 yards with a touchdowns. Four players had five tackles to lead the Storm defense. Mike Alvarez had an interception late in the game.
