Blizzard 30, Barnstormers 27
5/20/22 --
GREEN BAY, WI - A late touchdown and leaping interception proved to be the difference as the Green Bay Blizzard pushed back the Iowa Barnstormers tonight at the Resch Center.
The game was a back-and-forth the whole way and gave the Blizzard their first win over the Barnstormers since June 25 of last year; a 48-44 victory. The Barnstormers now lead the overall series 14-9 (8-4 home and 6-5 away). That dates back to the teams' days in the old af2 league.
Green Bay improves to 4-6 on the season (3-4 at home) and puts them back in the hunt for a playoff spot. The Barnstormers fall to 5-4 (1-4 away) and fall to fourth place in the standings. The Barnstormers claimed the first of three games between the teams this season, 36-18, on April 2. The third meeting comes in just seven days at Iowa.
Iowa struck first on a 38-yard field goal from Gabriel Rui. Green Bay took a 7-3 lead midway through the opening quarter on a 25-yard run from quarterback Jack Sheehan. The Barnstormers drew to within a point late in the quarter on Rui's 25-yard field goal. The Blizzard led 7-0 at the end of one.
Sheehan's 24-yard touchdown to Shaquon Curenton made the score 14-6 less than a minute into the second quarter. The Barnstormers scored with 12 seconds left in the quarter when Darius-James Peterson found Antonio Wimbush for a two-yard touchdown. The Blizzard took a 14-13 into halftime.
The Blizzard took a one-touchdown lead on a pair of field goals from Nick Jaworski of 36 and 40 yards. The Barnstormers tied it up when Wimbush plunged in up the middle from two yards out. The game was knotted at 20-20 heading into the fourth quarter.
Green Bay went up by three on Jaworski's 29-yard field goal early in the fourth. Dom McNeil gave the Barnstormers the lead with a four-yard run around the left side. The Blizzard came back and scored on a five-yard pass from Sheehan to a wide open Keshaun Taylor on the left side of the end zone with 1:17 remaining in regulation. Iowa started out with the ball at the Blizzard 20, but Peterson was intercepted at the one-yard line by Green Bay's Carl Robertgeau. The Blizzard were able to run out the clock and preserve the win.
Sheehan went 15 of 25 for 135 yards with two touchdowns, and rushed 42 yards and a score. Whitfield rushed for 29 yards and a score, and added four catches for 43 yards. Curenton finished with three grabs for 49 yards. Mason Gray and Shawn Steele II each recorded seven tackles, and James Brown added 1.5 sacks to his six tackles.
Peterson completed 11 of 18 throws for 126 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Wimbush rushed for 38 yards and a touchdown, and caught three passes for 32 yards and another score. McNeil led all receivers with 60 yards off four receptions. Ian McBurrough and Justic'e King each had six tackles to lead the defense.
The teams meet again next Friday, May 27, at Des Moines. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. in that one. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC Indoor Football League schedule.
