WORCESTER, MA - Sometimes, a team does just enough.
That's what happened when the Massachusetts Pirates scored with six seconds remaining to claim a home win over the Sioux Falls Storm tonight at the DCU Center, 43-42. The Pirates improve to 6-3 on the season and 4-1 at home. The Storm fall to 4-5 on the year and are on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoff picture.
This was the first-ever meeting between these teams. They never met in 2021. They play once more, on June 25, at Sioux Falls.
The Storm attempted a 60-yard field goal from Sawyer Petre on their opening drive which essentially served as a punt. The Pirates scored on a 10-yard cath-and-run from Alejandro Bennifield to Isaac Zico midway through the opening quarter. Sioux Falls countered with a 10-yard run around the left side from wide receiver Tim Keith. Bennifield's 20-yard touchdown toss to Darren Carrington II put the Pirates back in front. Massachusetts led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Sioux Falls took a one-point lead early in the second quarter when Nate Chavious rushed in from 11 yards out. The Pirates went back up when Bennifield found Owens for a 15-yard score in which the receiver powered his way into the end zone on the left side of the end zone. The Storm came right back with a 27-yard bomb from Dalton Sneed to a wide open Aaron Dilworth. The Pirates came right back on a 27-yard bomb of their own; this one from Bennifield to Carrington with just over three minutes left. After the Pirates' defense forced a turnover on downs, they took over on their own 21-yard line with 56 seconds left. The Pirates capitalized with a 41-yard field goal from Craig Peterson. Massachusetts led 30-21 heading into halftime.
The Storm forced a turnover on downs to open the second half, and capitalized with a one-yard run from Sneed. Peterson missed wide right on a 41-yard field goal try, giving the Storm the ball back. The Storm score was the only of the third quarter, leaving the Pirates with a 30-28 lead heading into the final quarter.
Sioux Falls took the lead on Sneed's pass to a diving Donnie Corley early in the fourth to make the score 35-30. The Pirates retook the lead on Bennifield's one-yard plunge midway through the quarter. Sneed rushed in from two yards to put the Storm back on top, 42-36 with 2:52 left. As the Pirates were driving when Bennifield went down to an undisclosed injury. Mike Glass III stepped in and tossed an eight-yard touchdown to Owens which proved to be the game winner.
Bennifield finished with four touchdown throws and one rushing score. Carrington and Owens each caught a pair of touchdowns, while Zico had one scoring grab for the Pirates.
Sioux Falls' Sneed throw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more. Chavious and Keith each rushed for a touchdown, while Dilworth and Corley caught a touchdown apiece.
