Sugar Skulls 69, Strike Force 65

SAN DIEGO, CA - In a close, contested matchup, the Tucson Sugar Skulls pulled away from the San Diego Strike Force late in the fourth quarter to claim a 69-65 win over the San Diego Strike Force at Pechanga Arena tonight.
With the win, the Sugar Skulls move to 5-4 on the season and remain in third place Western Conference Standings. The Strike Force fall to 2-7 and sit in sixth place in the standings.
The teams have split two games this season. The Strike Force claimed a 67-66 win over the Sugar Skulls in Tucson on April 9. The teams play once more; on July 2 at San Diego. The Sugar Skulls lead the overall series 5-1 (2-1 home, 3-0 away).
After forcing a turnover on downs on Tucson's opening drive, the Strike Force scored on a three-yard run from Davontae Sapp-Lynch. The Sugar Skulls came right back when Daquan Neal hit Carrington Thompson, Sr. for a 24-yard score. Ishmael Adams returned the ensuing kickoff 48 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the opening quarter. The Strike Force led 14-7 at the end of one.
Mike Jones enabled the Sugar Skulls to tie the game with a 13-yard run from Mike Jones. The Strike Force took a 17-14 lead with 10:42 left in the second quarter on Tanner Kuljian's 31-yard field goal. After Ben Moa recovered Neal's fumble, the Strike Force scored on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Jorge Reyna to Travon Van. Tucson cut into the lead with a 15-yard touchdown from Neal to Quinten Pedroza. The Strike Force came right back with a 10-yard pass from Reyna to Van. The Sugar Skulls narrowed their deficit to three points when Neal found Carrington Thompson, Sr. for a 10-yard touchdown. It appeared that Strike Force kicker Tanner Kuljian had nailed a 50-yard field goal as time expired in the half, but the score was waived off as the teams came back from the halftime break.
The Strike Force turned it over on downs on the opening drive of the first quarter, which started deep in it own territory. Neal rushed in for a 18-yard touchdown to give the Sugar Skulls their first lead of the game, but the point-after try was blocked, leaving the Sugar Skulls with a 34-31 lead with 10:31 left in the quarter. Trevon Van's one-yard run gave the Strike Force a 38-34 until Neal hit Thompson for a 30-yard score. The Strike force led 34-28 after three.
The fourth quarter provided some fireworks in this one. Reyna found Rodgers around the right side for a 21-yard touchdown. The Sugar Skulls came right back with a seven-yard strike from Neal to Arthur Jackson. Reyna's 30-yard bomb to Chris Lewis gave the Strike Force the lead. Just over five minutes later, Neal rushed in from a yard out. Jones scored on a two-yard run and, after getting the ball back, ran for another; a four yarder this time. and the Sugar Skulls were up by 10 at 69-59 with 22 seconds left. Rodgers' 12-yard run at the end of regulation cut the score to 69-65, which ended as the final score.
Neal threw for five touchdowns and rushed for another. Thompson caught two touchdown throws, while Jones rushed for a pair of scored and caught another. Pedroza and Jackson each had a scoring grab.
Reyna, who was just signed by the team a few days prior to the game, finished with four touchdown passes . Rodgers had a touchdown on the ground and through the air. Van rushed for a touchdown and caught a pair of scores.
