Breakdown
WRANGLERS
Northern Arizona is surpassing everyone's expectations this season as they sit tied atop the Western Conference standings at 7-2. What's even more impressive is that this is, essentially, an expansion team as only one player returned from last year's roster. They have an intense rivalry with their in-state rival Sugar Skulls. They score 43.8 points per game and allow a league-low 29.1. Kaleb Barker is having a great season, completing 61 percent of his passes for 1,207 yards. He is tied for third in the league with 27 touchdowns and has seven interceptions. He rushes for 38.6 yards per game to go with eight touchdowns. Israel Tucker is the featured back with four trips to the end zone. Glen Gibbons 223 receiving yards with six touchdowns, while Ulice Gillard comes in with 157 yards and a pair of scores. Leading receiver Quentin is on short-term IR. Mercardo Anderson leads the team with 49 touchdowns and four interceptions, and Darin Hungerford has 45 tackles, 4.5 sacks (third in the IFL) and 9.5 tackles for loss. JaQuan Artis comes in second in the league with six sacks along with 10.5 tackles for loss. Brandon Fischer has been solid in the kicking game this season.
SUGAR SKULLS
Tucson sits in third place in the Western Conference and, if the playoffs started today, would visit these same Wranglers in the opening round of the playoffs. The Sugar Skulls still could improve their playoff positioning with a win here and stringing some wins together, hoping that the Wranglers suffer enough losses to make that happen. Time over the next two months will tell. They score 53.1 points per game (second) and are last as they allow 54.0. Daquan Neal leads the league at a 69.5 completion percentage and is tied for the league lead with 153.4 passing yards per game. His 31 touchdowns lead the league and he has a single interception. Add to that his 32.3 rushing yards per game and 14 touchdowns. Mike Jones' 19 rushing scores are tops in the league, and he averages 39.2 yards per game. Carrington Thompson, Sr., Arthur Jackson and Quinton Pedroza come in with 388, 387 and 386 receiving yards, respectively. The talented trio combine for 28 touchdowns as well. Ronald Collins paces the defense with his 26 tackles, four sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss. Maurice Jackson boasts three sacks, seven tackles for loss and 21 tackles. Logan Justus is as reliable a kicker as there is in the IFL.
