Barnstormers 34, Blizzard 24
5/27/22 --
DES MOINES, IA - It wasn't pretty, but that's not required to come out on the winning side.
That's just what the Iowa Barnstormers did as they turned back the Green Bay Blizzard tonight at Wells Fargo Arena. The Barnstormers improve to 6-4 on the season and a perfect 5-0 at home. The Blizzard falls to 4-7 on the season and 1-3 on the road.
This was the third and final meeting between the teams. The Barnstormers defeated the Blizzard at home, 36-18, on April 2. The teams met last week at Green Bay, with the Blizzard outlast the Barnstormers, 30-27. Iowa leads the overall head-to-head meetings, 15-9 overall, including a 10-4 advantage at home and a 5-5 mark at home. That dates back to their meetings in the af2 league.
Green Bay struck first when Jack Sheehan hit a leaping Shaquon Curenton for a six-yard touchdown five minutes into the opening quarter. Iowa countered with 41-yard field goal. The Blizzard came back with a 20-yard field goal courtesy of Nick Jaworski. The Blizzard held a 10-3 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
The Barnstormers tied the game on a four-yard touchdown pass and catch from Darius James-Peterson to Dom McNeil. Sheehan found Steven Newbold, who dove backwards over a defender into the end zone for a 20-yards score. Kezlow Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards to knot the game with 11 seconds left in the half. The score was 17-17 at the intermission.
Iowa took its first lead of the game on Rui's 21-yard field goal four-and-a-half minutes into the third quarter. That would proved to be the only scoring in the quarter, giving the Barnstormers a 20-17 lead heading into the fourth.
The Blizzard went up 24-20 two minutes into the final quarter on a one-yard run around the right side from Tim Whitfield. Antonio Wimbush's nine-yard run around the right side put the Barnstormers back up on top midway through the quarter. Newbold was unable to return the kickoff out of the end zone before being tackled by Iowa's McNeil, resulting in a rouge. The Barnstormers added a score when Wimbush scored his second touchdown of the half, a 12-yard rush toward the right hashmark, but Rui's point after try went wide right. With the Blizzard driving, Newbold caught a Sheehan pass and headed down the right sideline, but Titus Howard forced him to fumble and the ball was recovered by the Barnstormers' JR Stevens. Iowa was able to run out the clock to preserve the win.
Peterson had a modest night, throwing for a touchdown and an interception. Wimbush came on in the second half with a pair of touchdowns, and McNeil ended up with a touchdown catch. Stevens recovered a fumble and picked off Sheehan, and Bailey had an interception.
Sheehan threw two touchdown passes, but also was intercepted twice. Whitfield rushed for a touchdown, while Curenton and Newbold caught a touchdown pass apiece. James Brown was all over the field during the game and recorded an interception.
The Blizzard will host the Quad City Steamwheelers on June 3 at 5:05 p.m. The Barnstormers are at home against the Sioux Falls Storm on June for for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC Indoor Football League schedule.
