Pirates 28, Bucks 25
5/28/22 --
WORCESTER, MA - Mike Glass III threw his second game-winning touchdown in as many weeks as the Massachusetts Pirates held off the Bismarck Bucks tonight at DCU Center, 28-25.
The win moves the Pirates to 7-4 overall and 5-2 at home. The Bucks fall to 3-8 and 2-3 on the road. This was the second of two games between the teams this season. The Pirates topped the Bucks on April 10 at Bismarck, 54-43. Massachusetts leads the overall series, 5-0 (3-0 home and 2-0 on the road); including the playoffs. The Pirates have won two straight, while the Bucks have dropped six in a row.
Bismarck scored on their opening drive via a 25-yard field goal from Chase Allbaugh. Massachusetts capped a 49-yard drive with a three-yard run around the left side from Thomas Owens. After a missed long field goal from the Bucks, the Pirates got the ball back as time expired in the first, leaving them with a 6-3 lead after one.
The Bucks recovered a Pirates fumble to start out at their own 20. They were unable to capitalize when Allbaugh's attempt from 29 yards went wide right. On the Pirates' next possession, Glass III was intercepted by the Bucks' Gerod Holliman. Bismarck responded immediately with a 39-yard bomb from Jayru Campbell to Alexis Rosario. Massachusetts responded with a one-yard run from Glass with 50 seconds left in the first half. Campbell's two-yard draw gave the Bucks a 15-13 lead with five seconds remaining.
The Pirates retook the league on Glass' four-yard touchdown to Deddrick Thomas around the left side. The Bucks scored on a six-yard toss from Campbell to Edgar Allen Poe, Jr. to go up 22-20 midway through the third quarter.
Campbell was intercepted by Khalid Wooten on a deep pass in the end zone. Bismarck's Jeff Branch caused Glass to fumble and Jamal Hicks recovered and the Bucks had the ball back. Bismarck responded with a 25-yard field goal to make the score 25-20 with just over a minute remaining. Glass' four-yard toss to Darren Carrington, coupled with Glass' two point conversion, put the Pirates up by three. Allbaugh's 61-yard field goal try went off the scoreboard as time expired.
Glass was filling in for regular Pirates starter Alejandro Bennifield who suffered an upper-body injury late in last week's win over the Sioux Falls Storm. This is the second straight game in which he has thrown a game-winning touchdown in the final seconds. He finished with two passing touchdowns and a rushing score. Owens rushed for one touchdown, while Thomas and Carrington had a scoring grab apiece
Campbell finished with a pair of touchdown passes and a rush for touchdown. Rosario and Poe each caught a score.
The Bucks will host the Frisco Fighters on June 4 at 5:05 p.m. The Pirates will visit the Duke City Gladiators on June 4 at 5:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC Indoor Football League schedule.
