5/28/22 --
RIO RANCHO, NM - The Duke City Gladiators did just enough to pull away from the San Diego Strike Force tonight, 54-49, at the Rio Rancho Events Center.
The Gladiators move to .500 at 5-5 with the win, and improve to 3-2 at home. They've won three straight. The Strike Force fall to 2-8 on the season, including a 2-4 mark on the road. They have dropped their last four games. The teams play once more this season; on July 9 at San Diego. This was the first historical meeting between the teams.
Duke City scored first on a six-yard pass from Ramone Atkins. The Gladiators recovered the onside kick and made the score 14-0 on Atkins 24-yard touchdown to Dello Davis. San Diego got on the board with a four-yard touchdown from Jorge Reyna to Kris Lewis. The Gladiators took a 14-6 lead into the second quarter.
The Gladiators added to that when Atkins found Jared Elmore for a five-yard touchdown early in the second. The Strike Force added a 41-yard field goal to make it 21-9 with just under 11 minutes remaining. Atkins' rush from nine yards out extended the lead before Davontae Sapp-Lynch scored on a one-yard touchdown with 3:30 left in the quarter. Atkins then hit Davis for a 10-yard touchdown, but the Strike Force came back with a 25-yard run from Trevon Van with just 24 seconds left. San Diego got the ball back, but Atkins pass was intercepted by David Haney and run back for a touchdown. 15 seconds later. Kevin Goessling booted a 45-yard field goal as time expired to make the score 36-29 at the half.
San Diego scored on Reyna's seven-yard touchdown to Marques Rodgers for seven yards. The extra point try was unsuccessful, so the Gladiators held a one-point lead. After getting the ball back, Reyna was sacked in the end zone by Duke City's Byron Cooper resulting in a safety. Atkins found Elmore for a five-yard touchdown to give the Gladiators a 45-35 lead at the end of the third.
Reyna's five-yard touchdown toss to Sapp-Lynch drew the Strike Force to within a field goal two minutes into the fourth quarter. With a chance to take the lead, Atkins was sacked by D'Darrin Primes, resulting in another safety for the Gladiators. Atkins responded with a five-yard touchdown to Eriq Swiftwater, putting Duke City up by 54-42 with 1:06 remaining. Sapp-Lynch's one-yard rush for a touchdown drew the Strike Force to within five points, but they were unable to overcome the deficit.
Atkins finished 24 of 31 for 242 yards with six touchdowns and an interception. He rushed for another score. Davis caught 11 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Elmore added 49 yards off six receptions to his two scoring grabs. Dent added six receptions for 60 yards and a score. Dent, Cooper and Roderick Chapman each had six tackles to lead the defense.
Reyna, playing in just his second game, finished 16 of 21 for 162 yards and four touchdowns. Sapp-Lynch rushed just six times, but scored on two of them.
