Rattlers 38, Panthers 23
5/29/22 --
PHOENIX, AZ - It took a while, but the Arizona Rattlers were able to pull away from the Bay Area Panthers tonight at the Footprint Center, 38-23.
Each team only scored a touchdown in the first quarter. The Rattlers added a score in the second quarter, but the action did not really start until the second half. With the win, the Rattlers move into a tie for first place with the Northern Arizona Wranglers at 8-2. The Rattlers and Wranglers play twice more this season; on June 11 at Prescott Valley and on July 2 at Phoenix. The 38 points scored was a season-low for the Rattlers this season.
The Panthers suffered their ninth straight loss. They are 1-9 on their inaugural season. This is the first of a back-to-back between the Panthers and the Rattlers.
After pulling out the win, Miles addressed the consistency it will take to embark on the remainder of the season. "I think it was a great win coming off a tough loss, but it wasn't up to our standards so we have a lot of improving to do. We've just got to keep on being consistent. Once we get consistent; once we get in control of that, we're going to be a good team."
Bay Area scored on its opening drive when Joe Newman found Daniel Crowell, Jr. for a 13-yard touchdown. Arizona came right back to tied it with one-yard run from quarterback Drew Powell. The game was knotted at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Rattlers got the ball back after Bay Area's Stevie Artique missed a 27-yard field goal. The teams traded missed field goals before the Rattlers got the ball back with just under four minutes remaining in the second quarter. They capitalized with a three-yard run up the middle to take the lead. Artique's 43-yard field goal try was no good as time expired. Arizona held a 14-7 lead at the half.
Arizona took the opening kickoff of the second half and scored on a 15-yard strike from Powell to Miles in the back left side of the end zone. The Panthers responded with a weaving 18-yard touchdown run from Duane Gary to make the score 21-14 with 8:44 left in the third quarter.
With the Rattlers deep in Rattlers territory, a bad snap cause the ball to fly over Powell's head and was recovered by Khalil Young. Newman hit Crowell for a 15-yard touchdown, but the two-point conversion run from Gary was short and the Panthers' deficit was five points with 10:32 left. Powell found Braxton Haley for a 22-yard touchdown to put the Rattlers up 35-23 midway through the fourth. Ernesto Lacayo added a 28-yard field goal with 46 seconds to go which all but seal the win for the Rattlers.
Powell had a pair of touchdown throws and another two touchdown runs. Miles rushed for a score and caught another. Haley also had a touchdown grab for the Rattlers. Newman threw for a pair of touchdowns, both to Crowell, for the Panthers. Gary scored the third touchdown for them.
This was the first of a back-to-back between the teams. They meet in San Jose on June 4 at 6 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC Indoor Football League schedule.
