Blizzard 31, Steamwheelers 13
6/3/22 --
GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard took over in the second half to turn away the Quad City Steamwheelers tonight at the Resch Center, 31-13.
The Blizzard outscored the Steamwheelers 24-7 in the second half, including 17-0 in the fourth quarter, to emerge with the win. They moved to 5-7 (4-4 at home) and keep pace in the Eastern Conference playoff race. They have won five of their last seven games.
This was the third meeting between the teams this season. The Steamwheelers won the first two; 49-31 at Quad City on April 30, and 47-44 at Green Bay on May 20. The Blizzard now lead the all-time series 3-2, including a 2-1 mark at home.
The Blizzard defense held the Steamwheelers' offense to a season low 13 points. Quad City's previous low came in a 35-24 loss to the Sioux Falls Storm in South Dakota on March 13. The Steamwheelers fall to 6-6 on the season, but remain in fourth in the Eastern Conference pending tomorrow's slate of five IFL games. They are also 2-4 on the road.
Green Bay hit the end zone on the opening possession when Jack Sheehan found Keshaun Taylor for an 11-touchdown. Each defense forced a turnover on downs, giving the Steamwheelers a chance to even the score. Quad City quarterback E.J. Hilliard fumbled on a scramble, and recently re-signed defensive back Bakari Triggs returned it to the one-yard line. The Blizzard were unable to convert. Green Bay led 7-0 after one quarter.
The Steamwheelers turned the ball over on a long missed field goal by the Steamwheelers' Jacob Stytz. Nate Sheets picked off Sheehan to give the Steamwheelers the ball back. Quad City missed a long field goal. Nick Jaworski's 26-yard field goal try went wide right with just over two minutes left in the second quarter, and the Steamwheelers had the ball back once again deep in their own territory. They drove down the field inside, but Stytz missed from 30 yards out (wide left). Jaworski attempted a 49-yard as time expired in the opening half, but it was also wide. The scored was knotted at 7-7 heading into the intermission.
Quad City received the second half kickoff, but was forced into another long field goal, which was short and wide left. The Blizzard took a seven-point lead with under five minutes in the third quarter on a 14-yard run from Tim Whitfield. The Steamwheelers responded with a catch-and-run touchdown around the right side from Hilliard to Rob Jones. The Blizzard led 14-13 going into the final quarter.
Green Bay scored on a six-yard run from Sheehan a minute into the fourth. The Blizzard defense stepped up again when Momodou Mbye recovered a Quad City fumble. They responded with a 33-yard bomb from Sheehan to Taylor and the Blizzard were up 28-13 with 6:40 left. After a turnover on downs, the Blizzard went up by 18 on Jaworski's 47-yard field goal -- a season long -- with 1:46 remaining. Carl Robertgeau intercepted Hilliard just outside the end zone, and the Blizzard were able to run out the clock to preserve the win.
Sheehan finished with two touchdowns through the air and another score on the ground. Taylor caught a pair of touchdown tosses and Whitfield scored his second touchdown in as many games for the Blizzard. Hilliard tossed two touchdowns for the Steamwheelers; to Rudd and Jones.
The Blizzard will visit the Massachusetts Pirates on June 11 at 4:05 p.m. After a bye next week, the Steamwheelers on June 17 at 5:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC Indoor Football League schedule.
