WORCESTER, MA - In just his second game with his new team, Tasleem Wilson threw for four touchdowns and rushed for two more to lead the Massachusetts Pirates to a 48-30 win tonight at the DCU Center.
The Pirates improve to 8-4 on the season and remain in second place in the Eastern Conference, pending the result of the Frisco Fighters-Duke City Gladiators contest later tonight. The top four teams in each conference earn a playoff bid with the top two earning home-field advantage in the first round. The Blizzard fall to 5-8 overall and remain on the outside looking in with three games left in their season.
This is the second of two games between the teams this season. The Blizzard earned their first win of the season on April 16 as they came back to win 38-31 in overtime on April 16 at Green Bay. Historically, the teams are 2-2 with each team winning twice at home
Green Bay scored on the opening drive of the game when Tim Whitfield ran up the middle from four yards out. Massachusetts responded with a 25-yard touchdown from Tasleem Wilson to Thomas Owens, who caught the pass while going over the dasher board in the back corner of the end zone. Trevon Claybourne intercepted Wilson to give the Blizzard the ball in their own territory. The Blizzard led 14-7 at the end of one.
The Blizzard added a 19-yard field goal from Nick Jaworski with 11:44. The Pirates cut into the deficit with a one-yard plunge from Wilson midway through the second quarter. The Pirates caught a break when Jaworski's 26-yard field goal try was missed. Massachusetts took its first lead of the game when Wilson hit Owens for a 35-yard touchdown. Green Bay drew even as time expired in the first half when Jaworski hit from 30 yards away. The game was knotted 20-20 at the half.
The Pirates scored on Wilson's three-yard pass to Owens. They added another score when Da’Sean Downey recovered Sheehan's fumble and returned it 14 yards for another touchdown. They Pirates led 34-20 at the end of the third.
Jaworski's 25-yard field goal cut into the lead with less than a minute to go in the fourth quarter. Wilson's two-yard run put the Pirates up 41-23 with 9:22 remaining. Sheehan hit Keshaun Taylor for a 14-yard touchdown to pull the Blizzard to within 11, but the Pirates responded with a 25-yard touchdown from Wilson to Darren Carrington II at the one-minute warning. As the Blizzard were unable to score, the Pirates were able to run out the clock and seal the win.
Owens caught three touchdowns, giving him 18 on the season. Carrington had the other scoring grab from Wilson for the Pirates. Sheehan threw for two touchdowns, to Newbold and Taylor, and Whitfield rushed for his third score in as many weeks for the Blizzard.
The Bucks will visit the Quad City Steamwheelers on June 17 at 5:05 p.m. After a bye in week 14, the Pirates will visit the Sioux Falls Storm at 5:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC Indoor Football League schedule.
