PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - There is a new leader in the Western Conference.
With a late touchdown and an excellent sack on the game's final play, The Northern Arizona Wranglers took the lead in the conference standings with a 37-34 win over the Arizona Rattlers tonight at Findlay Toyota Center. The win for the Wranglers clinched a playoff spot for the Wranglers and, via other league results, the Rattlers did as well.
Northern Arizona improves to 10-2 on the season and a perfect 5-0 at home. The Wranglers have had a notable turnaround from their inaugural 2021 season when they went 1-13. This was their first win over the Rattlers in franchise history. The Rattlers fall into second place in the Western Conference standings. The teams meet once more this season, on July 2 at Phoenix.
Arizona wasted no time scoring as Jarrod Harrington returned the opening kickoff 53 yards for the game's first score. After Northern Arizona turned it over on downs, Rattlers' kicker Ernesto Lacayo missed a 30-yard field goal try. The kickoff return was the only score of the quarter and gave the Rattlers a 7-0 lead going into the second quarter.
Jerrime Neal's 27-yard touchdown from Kaleb Barker knotted the score at 7-7 on the first play of the second quarter. Rattlers quarterback fumbled and was recovered by the Wranglers Trae Meadows. The Wranglers capitalized on the turnover on a 18-yard field goal from Brandon Fischer. Imeek Watkins recovered a fumble by the Rattlers' Shannon Brooks which resulted in a Wranglers touchdown; a two-yard pass from Barker to Ulice Gillard for a touchdown. Northern Arizona attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by Davontae Merriweather and returned for a Rattlers' touchdown. Brandon Fischer's 30-yard field goal put the Wranglers up 20-14 with 1:45 left in the second quarter. The Rattlers took a one-point lead on Powell's 14-yard scamper for a touchdown. Fischer hit from 20 yards to give the Wranglers a 23-21 lead at halftime.
Powell rushed for an eight-yard score to give the Rattlers a five-point lead midway through the third quarter. Ulice Gillard's three-yard touchdown put the Wranglers up by two points by the end of the third quarter.
The Rattlers went up 34-30 when Powell hit Jamal Miles with 8:22 left in the final quarter. Fischer's 33-yard field goal went wide left and things looked bleak. The Rattlers took the ball with 56 seconds left. As they attempted to run out the clock, but Powell fumbled and it was recovered by Tevin Homer with 23 seconds left on the clock. That gave the Wranglers a chance and they took advantage with Tucker's two-yard run. The Rattlers had one last chance, but Powell was sacked as time expired.
Barker went 11 of 25 for 113 yards with three touchdowns. Gillard caught a pair of scores and Neal had one for the Wranglers in the win.
Powell completed seven of 12 passes for 69 yards and a score. He also rushed for 53 yards and two scores, but fumbled three times. Jamal Miles, who caught four passes for 49 yards, had a touchdown. Trevon Kyree Woods led the defense with nine tackles.
