Blizzard 42, Storm 40
6/17/22 --
GREEN BAY, WI - The 25th time is the charm.
Nick Jaworski's 33-yard field goal as time expired propelled the Green Bay Blizzard past the Sioux Falls Storm tonight -- the first win by the Blizzard in the history of the regional rivalry after 24 losses (including a pair of playoff matches). The Blizzard's 42-40 tonight at the Resch Center keeps the Blizzard in the playoff hunt.
Green Bay improves to 6-8 on the season with two games left. They play at the Frisco Fighters and visit the Storm on July 9 (week 18). The Blizzard have byes in weeks 17 and 19. The Storm fall to 7-6 and remain, heading into tomorrow's slate of week 15 games.
The Storm scored before a second ticked off the clock. The Blizzard's Steven Newbold was unable to get Sawyer Petre's kickoff out of the end zone and the Storm had the 1-0 lead right off the bat. Jack Sheehan's five-yard touchdown toss to Keshaun Taylor put the Blizzard up 7-1 midway through the third quarter. Sioux Falls retook the lead with Nate Chavious rushed in from 32 yards out a minute later. Ladarius Skelton's two-yard run on Green Bay's ensuing possession gave the Blizzard the lead once again. They held a 14-8 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Sioux Falls went back up by a point early in the second quarter when quarterback Dalton Sneed rushed in from three yards. The Bucks answered instantly when Carl Robertgeau returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards for a score. Sneed's two-yard run put the Strorm up 22-20 with 8:29 remaining in the opening half. On the following kickoff, Tim Whitfield returned Petre's onside kick eight yards for a touchdown. After getting the ball back, the Blizzard scored as time expired in the half. The Blizzard took a 30-22 lead into halftime.
The teams traded possessions in the third quarter until Jaworski extended the lead to 33-22 at the 43-second mark of the quarter.
The Storm cut into the lead just under three minutes into the fourth quarter on a six-yard run around the left side from Carlos Thompson, Jr., and they earned the two-point conversion via a Bryson Denley rush Skelton's one-yard plunge put the Blizzard up 39-30. Sneed's four-yard rush pulled the Storm to within two points with 8:30 left.
After Jaworski's missed short field goal with nearly two minutes left, The Storm had a chance to take the lead. That set up the late-game kicking dual between he and Petre of the Storm.
Sheehan finished 16 of 25 for 143 yards with a touchdown throw and no interceptions. Skelton, his backup, rushed for a pair of scores. Taylor caught five balls for 59 yards and a score. Whitfield rushed for 19 yards and caught five passes for 41 yards. Shawn Steele II and James Brown each had eight tackles to lead the Blizzard defense. Deldrick Canty and Tyrell Jacobs each had a sack. Following his game-winning kick, Jaworski could be seen running down and around the end zone being congratulated by fans and coaches. Head coach Cory Roberson knelt down out of joy at the win.
Sneed completed 15 of his 23 attempts for 159 yards. All three of his touchdowns came on the ground. Nate Chavious rushed for 36 yards and a score, but went down to injury in the third quarter and did not return. Thompson led all receivers with six grabs for 65 yards, while Aaron Dilworth had three catches for 42 yards. Famus Hasty, Paris Taylor and Mike Alvarez each had seven tackles for the Storm defense.
The Blizzard will visit the Frisco Fighters on June 25 at 5:05 p.m. The Storm will host the Massachusetts Pirates on June 25 with kickoff also set for 5:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC Indoor Football League schedule.
