RIO RANCHO, NM - It was a competitive for a quarter, but the Arizona Rattlers took advantage of a defensive turnover and a kickoff return in the second quarter to pull away from the Duke City Gladiators tonight at Rio Rancho Events Center, 58-38.
The Rattlers gain a half game on Western Conference leading Northern Arizona Wranglers for the top seed. The Rattlers were coming off a last-second loss to the Wranglers last week. The teams play in what could decide who earns the top seed heading in the playoffs on July 2. Arizona is 10-3 overall and now 6-2 on the road. The Rattlers have won all six historical meetings between the team.
The Gladiators fall to 6-7 and find themselves in a three-way battle for the final two spots in the playoffs. These teams have met twice this season. The Rattlers won both home contests; 50-28 on March 19 and April 2. 5-0 (3-0 home, 2-0 away).
Duke City scored on the opening possession of the game when quarterback Ramone Atkins rushed up the middle for an 11-yard touchdown. The Rattlers responded with an end-around, one-yard run from Braxton Haley. Ernesto Lacayo's point-after try was blocked by Dontrell Johnson leaving the Gladiators with a one-point lead. Devontae Jackson's eight yard run gave the Gladiators a 14-6 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Arizona pulled to within a point when Jamal Miles returned the following kickoff 37 yards to the house. After Robert Landers recovered Atkins' fumble, the Rattlers were back in business. The Rattlers capitalized on the turnover when Powell ran in from five yards. The Rattlers added another score when Kyree woods took a tipped Atkins' pass and returned it nine yards to put them up 27-14 with 6:10 left in the quarter. Duke City stopped the bleeding with a 41-yard field goal from Kevin Goessling. The Rattlers tacked on a 19-yard field goal from Ernesto Lacayo to take a 30-17 lead into the break.
The Gladiators forced the Rattlers into a 37-yard field goal try, but Lacayo's kick went wide left. Duke City turned it over on downs and the Rattlers had the ball at the Gladiators' 23-yard line. The Rattlers scored on a two-yard run from Powell to go up by 20 late in the third quarter. Atkins found Jackson for a 39-yard catch-and-run touchdown later in the quarter. Arizona took a 37-24 lead into to the final quarter.
Tobias Little's one-yard run around the right guard put extended the lead to 21. With the Gladiators driving deep into Gladiators' territory Dillon Winfrey intercepted Atkins at the goal line and returned it for the touchdown. Atkins found Jared Elmore for a two-yard touchdown to make it 51-30 with just under five minutes left. Little scored on another one-yard run, only to be countered by the Gregory Dent, Jr.'s 51-yard kickoff return with 51 seconds left. Goessling hit a deuce to account for the 20-point margin
Powell, one of the league's top passers, did not have a touchdown through the air, but had two on the ground. Little scored both of his touchdowns for the Rattlers in the fourth quarter. Woods and Winfrey each returned interceptions for touchdowns, and Miles had a kickoff return for touchdown.
The Gladiators started strong, but faded after the opening quarter. Atkins tossed two touchdown passes and rushed for another. Jackson rushed for a touchdown and caught another. Emore had a touchdown reception and Dent a kickoff return for touchdown.
