Steamwheelers 57, Knight Hawks 56

HENDERSON, NV - E.J. Hilliard rushed for five touchdowns and threw for another three as he led the Quad City Steamwheelers to a very late score to secure a 57-56 win over their host Vegas Knight Hawks tonight at Dollar Loan Center.
This was the first-ever meeting between the teams, and the first and only inter-conference game of the season for the Steamwheelers. The Steamwheelers move to 8-6 on the season and remain in the driver's seat in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The knight Hawks fell to 5-9 and saw their playoff chances take a big hit.
The game started explosively. Carmon Dukes found KD Cannon for a 35-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage for the Knight Hawks. The Steamwheelers answered on their first play on a 30-yard pass from E.J. Hilliard to a wide-open Isaiah Grice down the right sideline. The Knight Hawks took the lead midway through the opening quarter on a 43-yard field goal from Nolan Kohorst which matches his season-long. Quad City responded with a 40-yard touchdown run around the left side from Hilliard, but Kimo Naehu's kick went wide right. Vegas answered on Dukes' 11-yard strike to Jordan McCray in the back of the end zone. The Steamwheelers came right back with an eight-yard run from Hilliard. Quad City held a 20-16 lead at the end of one with Vegas driving.
Dukes' 12-yard touchdown to Dez Epps put the Knight Hawks up 24-20 five minutes into the second quarter, but the Steamwheelers answered with a 15-yard touchdown to take a three-point lead less than two minutes later. Vegas scored on an eight-yard touchdown from Dukes to McCray. The Knight Hawks' defense forced a turnover on downs, and the offense responded with a 24-yard pass from Dukes to McCray. Vegas forced a 51-yard field goal try from Keahu as time expired, but the kick was no good and the Knight Hawks went into halftime with a 38-27 lead.
Hilliard rushed from eight yards out, and Rudd rushed and dive for the two-point conversion to pull the Steamwheelers to within a field goal to open the third quarter. The Knight Hawks extended the lead to 44-35 with a three-yard touchdown toss from Dukes to Cannon, who was shallow in the left side of the end zone. Kaehu missed a 45 yard field goal, barely wide to the right, and the Knight Hawks had the ball back. The Steamwheelers got the ball back when Darreon Jackson's interception of Duke's long bomb to the Quad City three-yard line. Vegas led 44-35 heading into the final quarter.
The Steamwheelers pulled to within two points on an eight-yard pass from Hilliard to Carrington, but Dukes and the Knight Hawks came right back with a seven-yard catch from Cannon. Hilliard's four-yard run, along with his two-point conversion pass to Rob Jones, tied the game at 50 apiece with 1:39 left. The Knight Hawks took a six-point lead with 41 seconds remaining. But, due to a bad snap on the point after try, it was only six points. E.J. Hilliard scored his fifth rushing touchdown with five seconds left, and Kimo Neahu's extra point gave the Steamwheelers the lead. Dukes tried a long touchdown pass, but it was intercepted in the end zone by the Steamwheelers and Quad City escaped with the win.
Hilliard rushed for well over 100 yards as the Knight Hawks' defense rarely held a linebacker back to cover his quarterback draws. His three touchdown passes came to three different receivers; Grice, Rudd and Carrington.
Dukes throw for a Vegas franchise-high eight touchdowns. McCray caught four of them, while Cannon hauled in three. Epps, who also played some defense due to injureies to the secondary. had another touchdown grab.
