Knight Hawks 65, Panthers 33

HENDERSON, NV - The Vegas Knight Hawks are still alive in the Western Conference playoff race.
The Knight Hawks left no doubters as they took down the Bay Area Panthers tonight at the Dollar Loan Center, 65-33. It was the second of two meetings between the teams as the Knight Hawks had previously defeated the Panthers, 53-27, on April 4. Vegas moves to 6-9 on the season, just a half game back of the Duke City Gladiators in the standings. Due to tiebreakers, the Knight Hawks need to win their remaining game in week 18 and see the Gladiators lose both of their remaining games to the San Diego Strike Force and Northern Arizona Wranglers.
Vegas scored on its opening drive with a four-yard strike from Cameron Dukes to Jordan Conkrite to the left side of the end zone. The Panthers tried a 58-yard field goal from Stevie Artique, but the ball went out of bounds to give the Knight Hawks the ball back. The Knight Hawks increased their lead to 14-0 at the end of the first quarter with a five-yard run from Davonte Sapp-Lynch.
Bay Area got on the board on Duane Gary's 17-yard scamper around the right side and up the middle. Conkrite's three-yard run up the middle gave the Knight Hawks a 21-7 lead with 7:13 left in the second quarter. The Vegas defense forced a turnover on downs in their own territory to put their offense back in business. The Knight Hawks tackled on a 25-yard field goal from Nolan Kohorst with just under two minutes left in the quarter. The Panthers responded immediately with a 49-yard kickoff return from Gary. The conversion was nullified due to a defensive penalty. The Knight Hawks drove deep into Panther territory, but were stopped by the Panthers' defense as time expired in the half. Vegas led 24-13 at the break.
The Panthers received the opening kickoff, but squandered the opportunity when Gary fumbled and the ball was recovered by Kai Higgins of the Knight Hawks. Dukes hit McCray for an eight-yard touchdown. The Panthers responded with a 31-yard bomb from Vincent Espinoza to McCray. Gary's two point conversion pulled Bay Area to within 10 points with 5:03 left in the third. Dukes' 20-yard touchdown extended the Vegas lead to 17 points. The Knight Hawks led 38-21 heading into the final quarter.
Dukes found Kasey Allison for a 14-yard touchdown to put the Knight Hawks up 45-21 early in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers cut into the deficit with a four-yard rush from Gary. The Knight Hawks went up by 25 on a four-yard touchdown run from Sapp-Lynch. Dukes' 10-yard touchdown to Kasey Allison put Vegas up 59-27 with 4:16 remaining in the fourth. Bay Area scored with just under to minutes remaining when Hurd found Isaiah Thomas for 23 yards before Dukes hit Cannon as time expired to seal the win.
Dukes finished 25 of 39 for 315 yards, six interceptions and no picks for the Knight Hawks. He also rushed for 22 yards. Allison caught nine passes for nine 115 yards, and Cannon had two catches for 105 yards and two scores. Jeff Ejekam led the defense with five tackles and Devin Washington had an interception.
Espinoza went three of six for 65 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and Hurd completed three of four passes for 20 yards and a touchdown. Gary rushed for a net 21 yards and two touchdowns. Thomas hauled in four receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Frederick Gaines' seven tackles paced the defense.
