Rattlers 40, Wranglers 28
7/2/22 --
PHOENIX, AZ - The race for the top seed in the Western Conference is still up for grabs.
The Arizona Rattlers stayed in contention for the top spot with a 40-28 win over the Northern Arizona Wranglers tonight at Wells Fargo Arena. The Rattlers are now 12-3; just a half game up on the Wranglers in the standings. Due to tiebreakers, The Wranglers can still clinch the first seed if they win their final two games over the Bismarck Bucks at home and the Duke City Gladiators on the road. Should the Rattlers win next week at home against the Vegas Knight Hawks and the Wranglers lose one of their remaining games, The Rattlers will claim the number one spot.
Northern Arizona defeated Arizona 37-34 at Prescott Valley. The Rattlers lead the overall series between the teams 3-1, including a 2-0 mark at home. The Wranglers now stand at 12-2 on the season.
The Rattlers scored on the opening drive of the game when quarterback Drew Powell rushed around the right side for a three-yard touchdown. The Rattlers forced a long field goal, essentially a punt, but they turned the ball over on downs, giving it back to Northern Arizona. They capitalized with a 20-yard touchdown from Kaleb Barker to Jerrime Neal. The score was knotted at 7-7 at the end of one.
The Wranglers capitalized on a Rattlers turnover to score on a two-yard run around the right side from Ulice Gillard. The Rattlers responded with a four-yard touchdown pass from Powell to Jamal Miles. The Arizona defense forced a turnover on downs and scored on a two-yard sweep from wide receiver Braxton Haley. The Wranglers were unable to score by the end of the half and the Rattlers took a 20-14 lead into the intermission.
Northern Arizona retook the lead with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Barker to Quinton Randolph. The Rattlers took the lead on Powell's five-yard pass to Haley with 5:11 left in the third. Arizona led 27-21 heading into the final quarter.
After Dillon Winfrey intercepted Barker, the Rattlers scored again on a one-yard run from Powell. Barker found Randolph for a nine-yard touchdown with 6:27 left. The Rattlers countered with a 32-yard touchdown from Powell to Jamal Miles with 5:15 remaining, but the Wranglers were unable to mount a comeback.
Powell finished 17 of 21 passing with 175 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 67 yards and two scores. Haley caught nine passes for 82 yards and three scores, and Miles had three catches for 48 yards and a score. Winfrey led the defense with 7.5 tackles and an interception. Treyvon Williams and Kyree Woods had 6.5 and six tackles, respectively.
Barker went nine of 20 for 112 yards with three touchdowns and a pick. He rushed for 97 yards off 14 carries. Randolph hauled in four passes for 52 yards to go along with a pair of scores. Darin Hungerford led the defense with seven tackles and Trae Meadows had an interception.
The Wranglers host the Bismarck Bucks on July 9 at 6:05 p.m. The Rattlers will be at home to face the Vegas Knight Hawks on July 10 at 3:05 p.m. That will be their regular season finale. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC Indoor Football League schedule.
