Steamwheelers 42, Barnstormers 35
7/15/22 --
MOLINE, IL - The Quad City Steamwheelers kept their playoff hopes alive as they turned back the Iowa Barnstormers tonight at Taxslayer Center.
With 12 seconds remaining and the Barnstormers driving on fourth and goal from the Steamwheelers' seven , Iowa needed a touchdown and extra point conversion two tie the contest and potentially send the game into overtime. That's when Noah Lyles of Quad City Noah Lyles broke through the offensive line and sacked Iowa quarterback Darius-James Peterson to seal the win.
Quad City's 42-35 win in the regular season finale pulls them, at least temporarily, into third place in the IFL's Eastern Conference standings. The Steamwheelers will have to wait only about 25 hours to learn their playoff fate. If the Sioux Falls Storm lose on the road in their finale to the Frisco Fighters on July 16, the standings will remain the same with the Steamwheelers at third. In that event, they would visit the Massachusetts Pirates in the first round of the playoffs next week. The Barnstormers would be fourth and visit the Fighters, who claimed home field advantage a couple of weeks ago.
Should the Storm defeat the Fighters tomorrow night, the Steamwheelers still have a chance; albeit a small one. Due to the league's tiebreaker structure, a Tucson Sugar Skulls loss would propel them above the Barnstormers into fourth and Sioux Falls would gain the top seed.
Quad City and Iowa finish the regular season at 9-7 overall and 8-7 in conference play. Each team won at home in all three of their matchups. Quad City took the first game on March 18 by a tally of 46-24. Iowa captured the second game, 63-47, on May 7. Iowa leads the overall series between the teams, 3-2 (2-0 home, 1-2 away).
The Steamwheelers got on the board on their first drive of the game when Kimo Naehu hit a 36-yard field goal. The Barnstormers took the lead on Peterson's two-yard touchdown to Kentrez Bell, Quad City's Edward Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards to put the Steamwheelers up 10-7 midway through the opening quarter. Defensive lineman Dave Calderon, the Quad City sack leader with 3.5, got in on the act with a one-yard run and the Steamwheelers were up 14-10 by the end of the first quarter.
Naehu added another 26-yard field goal to pull his team to within a point. After the Steamwheelers forced a turnover, quarterback E.J. Hilliard rushed for a 49-yard touchdown, seemingly breaking the backs of the Barnstormers defense. Naehu tied the game at 28 when he nailed a deuce on the ensuing kickoff that not only went straight through the uprights, but could have been good from even longer. The Steamwheelers led by a touchdown at the half, 21-14.
Iowa drew even with a six-yard run from Peterson before Hilliard scrambled for 36 yards for a score. Peterson hit Bell for a 36-yard touchdown to draw even at 28-28 with 35 seconds left in the third quarter.
Hilliard plunged in from a yard out to put the Steamwheelers up by a touchdown with nine minutes remaining. Iowa tied it two-and-a-half minutes later when Peterson hit bell for a 19-yard score to the back of the end zone. The Steamwheelers scored the go-ahead touchdown when Bell found Keyvan Rudd for a 43-yard touchdown.
Hilliard finished 10 of 16 for 150 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 17 times for 74 yards and three scores. Isaiah Grice caught five passes for 81 yards, and Rudd ended the game with four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown. Nathan Sheets had 6.5 tackles and Darreon Jackson recorded an interception.
Peterson went seven of 11 for 39 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He led all rushers with 90 yards off 16 carries along with a touchdown. Antonio Wimbush added 30 yards on the ground. Bell's three touchdowns came on his three receptions. Justic'e King led the defense with 5ive tackles, while Christopher Robinson added 4.5 tackles and a sack.
