FRISCO, TX - It was the best of one half and the worst of another.
Fortunately for the Frisco Fighters, the best came in the second half as they blanked the Sioux Falls Storm over those 15 minutes to emerge with a 35-28 win over the visiting Sioux Falls Storm tonight at Comercia Center. Frisco is already locked in as the top seed of the playoffs. The Fighters will host a playoff game on Friday, July 22 at 5:05 p.m. against the Iowa Barnstormers.
The loss by Sioux Falls eliminates the Storm from the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and the first time ever since they have been a member of the current iteration of the Indoor Football League. They finish 8-8 and in fifth place; a game behind the Quad City Steamwheelers and Iowa Barnstormers who enter the playoffs as the third and fourth seeds, respectively. The Steamwheelers will visit the Massachusetts Pirates on Friday, July 22 at 4:05 p.m.
The Fighters defeated the Storm in the previous matchup this season, 57-39 at Sioux Falls. Frisco, which finishes the regular season with a league-best 14-2 record, leads the overall series against the Storm 3-0 (2-0 home, 1-0 away).
Sioux Falls scored on it's opening drive when Dalton Sneed found Nate Chavious down the right sideline for an 11-yard score. The Fighters answered on quarterback TJ Edwards' 14-yard touchdown scramble around the right side. Sawyer Petre tacked on a 36-yard field goal to give the Storm a 9-7 lead. Sheldon Augustine ran the kickoff back to within the Storm five-yard line, but fumbled and the ball was recovered by the Storm. They responded on the next play, a 47-yard touchdown bomb from Sneed to Donnie Corley. The Storm led 15-7 at the end of one.
Sioux Falls' Famus Hasty intercepted Edward and returned it to the 22 yard line to start the second quarter. The Storm capitalized on the turnover with a one-yard run from Sneed. The Fighters settled for a field goal try on their next drive, but Bryce Crawford's attempt went just wide right. The Storm came right back when Chavious ran it in from a yard out to extend the lead to 28-7 with just over a minute to go in the half. Frisco cut into the lead when Blake Sims rushed around the right side, but fumbled. The ball took an opportune bounce and right into the hands of Fighters offensive lineman Kohl Leveo in the end zone as time expired in the half. The Storm took a 28-14 advantage into the break.
Justin Rankin's one-yard touchdown around the left guard pulled the Fighters to within a touchdown to open the second half. Sneed fumbled at the Fighters one and Frisco's J.D. Griggs recovered at the three to put the Fighters back in business. They responded with a one-yard run from Justin Rankin, who was reactivated from short-term injured reserve earlier in the week. The game was knotted at 28-28 heading into the final quarter.
Sioux Falls had to settle for a 35-yard field goal try from Petre. The kick was wide right and gave the Fighters a chance to to take the lead. They did just that as Edward hit Sheldon Augustine for a three-yard touchdown with 4:17 remaining in regulation. Sneed went for the home run ball on the next drive, but it was intercepted by Clifton Duck to five the ball back to the Fighters with just under three minutes remaining and with a touchdown lead. They were able to run out the clock.
Edwards completed 10 of 17 passes for 110 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for a game-high 103 yards and two scores. Rankin finished with 36 yards and a score on the ground. Jerminic Smith and Sheldon Augustine had 51 and 42 yards, respectively, with the latter adding a touchdown grab. Trey Wafford and Zaycoven Henderson led the Fighters' defense with five tackles apiece.
Sneed went eight of 18 for 127 yards with a two touchdowns and a pick. He rushed for 21 yards and a score. Chavious ended with 34 yards, and a score on the ground and another through the air. Corley caught three passes for 66 yards to go along with his touchdown catch. Marquis Hendrix and De'John Rogers each had eight tackles for the Storm defense.
