WORCESTER, MA - What a difference an extra point can make.
Kimo Naehu's successful point after in overtime was just enough to lift the Quad City Steamwheelers past the Massachusetts Pirates tonight, 39-38, to advance to the Eastern Conference Championship next week. The third-seeded Steamwheelers will visit the top seeded Frisco Fighters next Friday at 5:05 p.m.
With the game knotted at 32-32 at the end of regulation, an overtime session was initiated. Quad City won the coin toss and elected to get the ball second. The Pirates scored on Deddrick Thomas' two-yard run, but Josh Gable's kick failed to go through the uprights. The Steamwheelers got the ball and punched it when E.J. Hilliard rushed in from a yard away. Naehu's point after was true and send the Steamwheelers into the next round.
The teams met once during the regular season when the Pirates defeated the Steamwheelers, 36-35, on April 3. That was the first-ever meeting between the teams.
Massachusetts struck first on a seven-yard run from Alejandro Bennifield. Aarion Maxey-Penton added a two-point conversion. Hilliard found Isaiah Grice for a 19-yard score to pull Quad City Steamwheelers to within two points. Bennifield added a two-yard run to extend the Pirates' lead and they held it at 15-6 at the end of the opening quarter.
Hilliard rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, of one and two yards, respectively, and the Steamwheelers led 20-15 with 6:02 remaining. They added three points on Naehu's 46-yard field goal with 36 seconds left in the first half. Naehu added a deuce to his tally on the ensuing kickoff. They took a 25-15 lead into the break.
The only score of the third quarter came when Bennifield hit Thomas Owens for a 10-yard score midway through the quarter, leaving the Steamwheelers with a 25-22 lead heading into the fourth.
The Pirates tied the game midway through the fourth quarter when Josh Gable hit a 25-yard field goal. The Steamwheelers retook the lead on Hilliard's 26-yard touchdown pass to Keyvan Rudd. The Pirates tied it at 32 apiece when Thomas ran it in from 10 yards out.
Hilliard completed 10 of 17 throws for 146 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 43 yards and three scores. Rudd caught three passes for 53 yards and a touchdowns, and Kerrion Moore had four catches for 46 yards. Nathan Sheets' 6.5 tackles led the Steamwheelers defense. He also had a forced fumble which he recovered.
Bennifield went 10 of 17 for 112 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 32 yards and two scores before leaving the game with a rib injury in the second half. Thomas rushed for two touchdowns and caught a pair of passes for 37 yards. Darren Carrington II and Owens each caught for passes for 50 and 37 yards, respectively. Naashon Hughes led the defense with six tackles, a sack and an interception.
