FRISCO, TX - The Frisco Fighters outscored the Iowa Barnstormers 20-0 in the second quarter, and 23-12 in the fourth, to advance to the Eastern Conference finals next week with a 64-39 win over the Iowa Barnstormers tonight at Comercia Center.
The Fighters will host the Quad City Steamwheelers next week with a ticked to the Dollar Loan Center IFL National Championship game on the line. The game will take place at Frisco next Friday night, July 19, at 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central). The Steamwheelers earned their ticket to the conference final with a 39-38 overtime win over the defending champion Massachusetts Pirates earlier this evening.
Frisco won the only game between the teams this season, a 62-42 decision over Iowa on June 18. The fighters now lead the all-time series 3-0 with two wins at home and another on the road. The Barnstormers finish their season at 9-8 overall and will head back to Iowa to first take break, and then head into 2023.
The Fighters came out with a bang, scoring on the first play from scrimmage when TJ Edwards connected with Jerminic Smith for a 43-yard touchdown. The Barnstormers came right back with a 26-yard touchdown from Darius-James Peterson to running back Antonio Wimbush. Justin Rankin's 11-yard rush game the Fighters a 14-6 lead with 7:28 remaining in the opening quarter. Ardarius Stewart's four-yard score from Peterson pulled the Barnstormers closer, and they tied it on a two-point conversion run from Wimbush. The game knotted at 14=14 heading into the second quarter.
Frisco owned the second quarter. The Fighters started it off with a three-yard run from Edwards and after getting the ball back, they scored again on Edward's 12-yard pass to Smith. As the Barnstormers were driving, Santos Ramirez intercepted Peterson and returned the ball 44 yards for the final score of the half. The Fighters led 34-14 heading into the break.
Iowa cut into the lead when Peterson found Kentrez Bell for a 13-yard score. The Fighters came right back, scoring on a nine-yard run from Justin Rankin at the 8:10 mark of the third. Peterson hit Dom McNeil for a one-yard touchdown. The Barnstormers were staying catch-up as they entered what would be the final quarter of their season, down 41-27.
Edwards rushed for a nine-yard touchdown early in what would become a wild fourth quarter for the teams. The Barnstormers responded with a one-yard run from Peterson with 6:02 to go in the game. Frisco's Cedric Poole returned the ensuing kickoff 48 yards for a score. Frisco got the ball back and scored on a one-yard run from Justin Rankin. Dom McNeil's 31-yard touchdown catch pulled the Barnstormers to within 22 points. The Fighters sealed the win on a four-yard run from Edwards.
Edwards finished seven of 10 for 116 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. he also rushed for 69 yards and three scores. Rankin matched Edwards' three touchdowns while rushing for 47 yards. Smith hauled in four passes for 84 yards to go with his two touchdown grabs. Trey Wafford led the defense with 11 tackles and Santos Ramirez recorded an interception. Caleb Bailey, Larry Tharpe, Jr. and Zaycoven Henderson each had a sack.
Peterson went 15 of 27 for 210 yards with five touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for a score. Antonio Wimbush rushed for 52 yards and caught one pass for a 26-yard touchdowns. Ardarius Stewart caught five passes for 77 yards and a score, while Dom McNeil had five catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Adihia Bell and Justic'e King recorded 6.5 and six tackles, respectively, and Christopher Robinson added an interception to the Barnstormers' defensive effort.
