Wranglers 49, Sugar Skulls 30
7/23/22 --
PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - What a turnaround.
After going 1-13 in their 2021 inaugural season, the Northern Arizona Wranglers are heading to the Western Conference game. The Wranglers will either visit the Arizona Wranglers or host the Duke City Gladiators next week, pending the outcome of the other conference first round matchup tomorrow afternoon.
Northern Arizona's turnaround has been nothing but phenomenal as they essentially started over this season. This marks the third time this season that the Wranglers have defeated the Sugar Skulls. They lost the first matchup on April 23, 72-62, at Tucson. They recorded wins over Tucson, 36-21, at home on May 14, and 34-32 on May 28 at Tucson.
The Wranglers scored before a play from scrimmage was even run when newly signed Craig Peterson's opening kickoff went into the end zone without being returned out of it, resulting in a rouge. After a defensive stop, the Wranglers got the ball back. They took an 8-0 lead on quarterback Kaleb Barker's three-yard run. The Sugar Skulls responded with a one-yard run from Mike Jones. The Wranglers extended their lead with Barker's 11-yard touchdown strike to Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman. Northern Arizona led 15-6 at the end of one.
The second quarter was a little wild. Imeek Watkins put the Wranglers up 22-6 with a nine-yard run early in the quarter. Logan Justus hit a 43-yard field goal to pull the Sugar Skulls to within 13 points. On the kickoff, Watkins took the ball deep in his own end zone and returned it 56 yards for another Wranglers score. Daquan Neal found Quinton Pedroza for a 12-yard touchdown. The Wranglers responded with a 37-yard field goal from Peterson. Tucson scored with 12 seconds remaining when Neal hist Jazeric Peterson for a 45 touchdown bomb. Northern Arizona had just enough time to counter with a 45-yard field goal from Peterson.
The only score of the third quarter came on a 14-yard run from Barker and the Wranglers took a 42-24 lead into the final quarter.
After Neal was intercepted by the Wranglers' Marquise Bridges intercepted Neal, the Wranglers scored on a three-yard touchdown pass from Barker to Chiaokhiao-Bowman. Tucson scored on a five-yard run from Jones. However, the Sugar Skulls were unable to complete the comeback.
Barker completed 11 of 16 passes for 104 yards with two touchdowns and no picks. He rushed for 68 yards and three touchdowns. Chiaokhiao-Bowman caught both of Barker's touchdown throws, and Jerrime Neal had three caches for 31 yards. Bill Atkins led the defense with 7.5 tackles and Darin Hungerford had seven. Meadows and Homer each recorded a touchdown.
Neal went 19 of 31 yards with a pair of touchdowns and two costly picks. Jones rushed for a pair of scores. Peterson caught five passes for 92 yards and a score, and Pedroza had six grabs for 70 yards and a score. David Haney and Grant Ibeth each had four tackles for the Tucson defense.
