Rattlers 53, Gladiators 14
7/24/22 --
PHOENIX, AZ - Holding an indoor football team scoreless for 49 minutes will likely garner you a win.
That's just what the Arizona Rattlers' defense did this afternoon as they blanked the Duke City Gladiators from the 4:16 mark of the first quarter through the final buzzer to lift the Rattlers past the Gladiators, 53-14, this afternoon at the Footprint Center. With the dominating win, the Rattlers advance to the Western Conference Championship game next week, which will be held next Saturday, July 30 at 6:05 p.m. (pacific).
The Rattlers have now beaten the Gladiators in all seven meetings, including a pair of playoff contests. They are 4-0 over Duke City this season. Arizona defeated Duke City 58-55 last season in the playoff semifinals to earn a trip to the United Bowl.
The Rattlers and the Wranglers have split their two games this season with each team winning at home. The winner of that game will punch its ticket to the IFL National Championship game on August 13 at the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada.
Rattlers head coach Kevin Guy talked about facing the Wranglers in the conference final in front of the home fans. "Hey, (the Wranglers) earned it. They've got a lot of great players; a great coaching staff. It's going to be one hell of a ball game. (Rattlers fans) are outstanding; a great homefield advantage. That's why we fought like hell to win the number one seed because these guys give us an advantage."
After Isaiah Huston returned the opening kickoff to the Duke City five, the Rattlers scored on a two-yard run up the middle from Shannon Brooks. The Gladiators responded on their second play from scrimmage when Ramone Atkins found Gregory Dent, Jr. for a 44-yard bomb to the end zone. Arizona came right back and scored on a 27-yard pass from Drew Powell to Jamal Miles in the right side of the end zone and the Rattlers lead was 14-7 less than seven minutes into the contest. Atkins hit Dent diving over the dasher board in the right side of the end zone for a 12-yard score which knotted the game at 14-14 with 4:16 remaining in the first quarter. That score would last through the end of the quarter.
Arizona took the lead when Powell found Brooks in the left side of the end zone for a seven-yard score. Duke City drove down to the Rattlers' one yard line, but were stopped by the Rattlers defense. On the ensuing Arizona drive, Powell fumbled on a quarterback draw and the ball was recovered by Duke City's Jayson Serda. Atkins was intercepted by Dillon Winfrey and the Rattlers responded with a 41-yard touchdown from Powell to Braxton Haley. Huston recovered the Rattlers' onside kick and Arizona was back in business. Powell hit Brooks on a 40-yard touchdown to put the Rattlers up 35-14 with 33 seconds remaining in the half. Atkins looked for Demarius Washington in the end zone, but it was Arizona's Kyree Woods who came down with the ball. Ernesto Lacayo's 48-yard field goal as time expired gave the Rattlers a 38-14 lead heading into intermission.
The Rattlers added a rouge on the opening kickoff of the third quarter. The Gladiators drove down and scored on a four-yard run from Atkins, but the play was called back due to a holding penalty by Zachary Fondal. Fondal was then flagged for two successive personal foul/unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. That pushed Duke City back to their own 10 while Fondal was ejected from the game. The Gladiators were forced to attempt a 62-yard field goal, but the kick went into the crowd along the right sideline. The Rattlers responded with a six-yard touchdown from Powell to Miles. Arizona led 46-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
With the Gladiators driving, Atkins was picked off by Woods. The Rattlers capitalized with a three-yard run from Brooks. Woods recorded his third interception of the game with a diving pick over the wall to give the Rattlers the ball back. The possession was short-lived as backup quarterback Demry Croft was intercepted by the Gladiators' Dent, who was playing both sides of the ball. Javin Kilgo replaced Atkins and was promptly intercepted by Woods, giving him four picks for the game.
Woods commented post-game on he and his team's performance. "It was a good team victory. We all came out and fired on all cylinders; special teams, offense, defense ... we all played team ball today and not we've got to carry that to next week. I was just able to be in the right position, man, and shoutout to all my teammates. I was just able to make the play."
Powell rushed threw for five touchdowns, while Shannon Brooks rushed for two scores and caught another pair of touchdowns. Miles had two touchdowns and Haley hauled in a scoring grab for the Rattlers. Woods' four interceptions are the most in the league in a single game this season.
Atkins tossed two touchdowns, both to Dent, but he also tossed four interceptions for the Gladiators.
