Stanford has struggled over the past few years. I think Shaw has had trouble recruiting for a while. I think the writing was on the wall for quite some time on this decision.
As far as candidates, there are a few, but they have to strike while the iron is hot. I like former Virginia and BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy Jr., and Former Texas head coach Tom Herman. A couple of dark horses could be Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun and former Florida head coach Dan Mullen. It's entirely possible, however, that they could promote from within their own coaching staff so I wouldn't rule anything out.

From what I know about the various names you mentioned, Mendenhall would be the best pick. That's just the perspective of an outsider looking inside though. |

This saddens me, but I'm not too surprised. He had a good run and did a lot of great things for the program. It meant a lot that he had played for Stanford and was elevated after Harbaugh left. We basically had Shaw as our coach for four years and we had awesome success. A lot of that, when we were there for our first two years, was primarily due to Andrew Luck, but Shaw also brought in guys like Christian McCaffrey and others. He was a great coach, but I think the time had come. I thank him for those terrific years we had when we were there. I don't have a clue who the next head coach will be or should be, but I hope we get back to the 2010s level of success that Harbaugh and Shaw brought..
