Rattlers 60, Steamwheelers 53
3/17/23 --
MOLINE, IL - In an Indoor football League season opener to not soon forget, Drew Powell threw for four touchdowns and rushed for another three as the Arizona Rattlers toppled the Quad City Steamwheelers, 60-53, to kick off the 2023 IFL season.
Much of the game was a back-and-forth effort which saw the Rattlers outscore the Steamwheelers 24-13 in the final quarter to come away with the win tonight at Vibrant Arena; formerly the TaxSlayer Center. The crowd at the game was solid to see the opener, and the Youtube audience at one point reached nearly 2,000 live viewers.
Arizona scored on it's opening drive when Drew Powell found Jamal Miles for a 26-yard score three minutes into the game. Quad City answered on E.J. Hilliard's 21-yard run around the right side, but Chase Allbaugh's kick went wide right leaving the Rattlers with a 7-6 lead. The Steamwheelers' defense forced a turnover on downs midway through the opening quarter to put their offense back in business at their own 21. However, they were unable to capitalize when Allbaugh's 32-yard field goal attempt went wide to the right. Arizona led by a point at the end of the first quarter.
The Rattlers went up by eight on Powell's seven-yard touchdown strike across the middle to Isiah Scott early in the second quarter. The Steamwheelers scored again on a Five-yard pass from Hilliard to the right side to Keyvan Rudd who leapt over a defender into the end zone. Allbaugh's point after try was no good and Quad City trailed by a point midway through the second. Allbaugh's kickoff bounced off the upright and into the end zone where it was recovered by Damion May for a Quad City touchdown to give the Steamwheelers their first lead at 18-13. The scoring play reflects a rule change this season in the IFL this season. Previously, if the ball hit the upright and bounced into the field of play, it was a dead ball. The rule change allows such a situation to be considered a live ball enabling either team to recover and advance it.
Arizona retook the lead when Powell rushed in from a yard out. After a failed Rattlers onside kick attempt, former Rattler Jarrod Harrington put the Steamwheelers ahead with a one-yard run up the middle. The Rattlers weren't done though as Powell hit Braxton Haley with an eight-yard touchdown in the middle of the end zone with 12 seconds left. Allbaugh's 34-yard field goal put the Steamwheelers up 27-26 at the half.
The Steamwheelers extended the lead when Hilliard found Mike Carrigan for a four-yard scoring pass, but Allbaugh's kick went wide left leaving Quad City with just a seven-point lead. The Rattlers came back and tied it with a 31-yard pass from Powell to Haley down the sideline. The Steamwheelers turned it over on downs on their next possession and Arizona took a three-point lead with Peterson's 25-yard field goal late in the third quarter. Hilliard hit C.J. Windham for a 36-yard scoring strike down the left sideline. Quad City led 40-36 heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter proved even wilder. Arizona took a three-point lead on the opening play of the fourth quarter when Dillon Winfrey returned Quad City's kickoff 51 yards for a score. Hilliard's 20-yard touchdown strike to Harrington put the Steamwheelers back in the lead three minutes into the quarter. Allbaugh's extra point attempt was blocked and returned by the Rattlers' Chris Terrell to narrow the Quad City lead to a single point at 46-45. Miles scampered for an 11-yard run which put the Rattlers up, but Powell's pass on the two-point conversion try was off the mark. Peterson countered with a deuce which, due to another IFL rule change this season, is allowed during the duration of the game rather than just in the final minute of each half.
Arizona forced a turnover on downs and capitalized with a 19-yard touchdown run around the right side from Powell with 53 second remaining. Hilliard scored on a five-yard run with three seconds remaining. The Steamwheelers attempted an onside kick, but the ball went out of bounds as time expired; leaving the Rattlers with the win.
Powell went 13 of 23 through the air for 139 yards with for touchdowns with no picks. He rushed for 89 yards and three touchdowns. Braxton Haley his main target, catching five balls for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Devontae Merriweather led the defense with seven tackles, while both Winfrey and Terrell had six tackles apiece to go with each of their special teams scoring plays.
Hilliard completed 12 of 22 passes for 123 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 123 yards and a pair of scores. Windham led all receivers with seven catches for 86 yards and a score. Nathan Sheets paced the Steamwheelers' defense with nine tackles, while Darreon Jackson and Joseph Freeland each tallied six apiece.
There were no turnovers by either team with the exception of May's kickoff recovery in the end zone for the Steamwheelers. The team comparisons were very close as Quad City Steamwheelers outgained the Rattlers 276 yards to 270. Arizona had the advantage through the air, 139 yards to 123, while Quad City had the edge on the ground, 153 yards to 131. The Steamwheelers had the edge in time of possession, 35:04 to 24:56.
The Steamwheelers are back in action on March 26 when they visit the San Diego Strike force for a 3:05 p.m. kickoff. The Rattlers will visit the Bay Area Panthers on March 26 at 35:05 p.m. All times noted are pacific time. Click for our complete 2023 IFL Schedule.
