Fighters 76, Blizzard 30

GREEN BAY, WI - T.J. Edwards rushed for six touchdowns and tossed another, and the Frisco Fighters scored 39 straight points in the second and third quarters, to come away with a 76-30 today over the Green Bay Blizzard at the Resch Center.
It was the 2023 Indoor Football League season opener for both teams. The Fighters move to 1-0 on the season while the Blizzard fall to 0-1. The teams have now met four times with Frisco winning all four meetings, including three at Green Bay.
Green Bay scored on their opening drive when Terrence Smith rushed around the left side for an eight-yard touchdown. Logan Justus' point after try went wide left. Frisco answered on Edwards' 2 yard run up the middle. The conversion attempt failed due to a bad snap. The Blizzard took a 9-6 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the opening quarter on a 23-yard field goal from Justus. Edwards' one-yard run put the Fighters up by four with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter. The Blizzard came right back right away when Ja'rome Johnson found Steven Newbold for a 34-yard score. Green Bay was up 16-13 after the first 15 minutes of play.
The second quarter was all Frisco. The Fighters re-took the lead on a 17-yard run from Edwards two minutes into the second quarter. Ed Wesley's three-yard run with 5:55 remaining to give the Fighters a 26-16 lead. They added to the lead with a two-yard run from Edwards and further added to it when Wesley rushed in from 10 yards out with just under a minute left. Edwards found B.J. Bunn down the right sideline at the nine-second mark and Frisco went into intermission with a 46-16 advantage.
Edwards' 19-yard run early in the third quarter extended the lead to 52-16. The Blizzard ended their scoring drought when Max Meylor hit Steven Newbold across the middle for a five-yard score. Bryce Crawford's 23-yard field goal added to the Fighters lead before Smith's two-yard run drew Green Bay to within 25 with 1:25 remaining in the Quarter. The Fighters led 55-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
Edwards rushed in from 11 yards at the 13:21 mark of the final quarter and, after Michael LoVett intercepted Meylor to give the Fighters back the ball, Edwards rushed in from five yards. On The Blizzard's next series Maylor's pass was intercepted by Frisco's Kordell Jackson, who returned it 36 yards midway through the quarter.
Edwards went 14 of 20 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 78 yards and his six scores. Wesley rushed 10 times for 47 yards and three touchdowns. Jerminic Smith and Spencer Tears each caught five passes, for 54 and 52 yards, respectively. Jackson led the Fighters defense with 11 tackles to go along with his interception return for touchdown. LoVett had two interceptions, and Kyle Meyers added a pick.
Meylor had the better night among Green Bay's quarterbacks, completing eight of 19 of his passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. He and Johnson each tossed a pair of interceptions. Johnson led the Blizzard rushing attack with 33 yards off five rushes. Smith rushed for two touchdowns on the afternoon. Newbold, who caught both of Green Bay's touchdowns, accumulated 61 yards off three catches. Jakoby Pappillion's six tackles led the team's defensive effort.
The Fighters amassed 261 total yards of offense to the Blizzard's 206. The main different came on the ground where Frisco had 122 yards to Green Bay's 65. The Fighters were penalized eight times for 39 yards, while the Blizzard were flagged three times for 17 yards. Time of possession was fairly even, with Frisco having 30:46 to 29:14 advantage.
