FRISCO, TX - It wasn't always pretty, but the Frisco Fighters were able to hold off the Tulsa Oilers tonight at Comercia Center, 35-13.
The Fighters move to 2-0 on the young Indoor Football League season, having defeated the Green Bay Blizzard in week one. The Oilers, this year's lone expansion team in the league this season, we're making their IFL debut. The teams will meet up again on May 13 at Tulsa.
Charles Headen III returned the opening kickoff 52 yards to put Frisco up early. Willie Hibbler recovered a Tulsa fumble near midfield and the Fighters were back on offense. The Oilers' defense forced a turnover on downs. They took advantage with a 23-yard field goal with 6:38 left. The Fighters returned the favor when Bryce Crawford hit from 43 yards. J.D. Griggs got the ball back for Frisco after recovering another Oilers' fumble. Ed Wesley's one-yard touchdown plunge as time expired gave the Fighters a 16-3 lead after a quarter of play.
Reynolds' field goal try early in the second quarter sailed wide left. Jordan Jones recovered Headen's fumble to give the Oilers back the ball, but they were unable to convert when Reynolds' 26-yard field goal was blocked by Zaycoven Henderson of the Fighters. On Tulsa's ensuing drive, Giovanni Sanders was intercepted by Trayshon Foster at Frisco's own 23 yard line, and the Fighters scored on a six-yard run up the middle from Wesley. Frisco entered intermission with a 22-3 lead.
The Oilers tackled on a field goal early in the third quarter. The Fighters settled for a 26 yard field goal from Crawford with just under nine minutes remaining in the quarter. The Oilers scored their first touchdown in franchise history on a 31-yard bomb from Sanders to Joshua Crockett to pull Tulsa to within 12 points with seven minutes remaining. Tulsa blocked Crawford's long field goal try and took over the ball at Frisco's 12 yard line. Frisco led 25-13 heading into the fourth quarter.
Tulsa's next drive was marred by offensive penalties. They ended up setting for a 51-yard field goal try from Reynolds, but it was blocked and subsequently recovered by Henderson of the Fighters. Three plays later, T.J. Edwards scored on a one-yard run into the end zone. The Oilers turned the ball over on downs on their next possession and the Fighters took advantage via a 46-yard field goal from Crawford. The Oilers once again turned it over on downs at the one-minute warning and the Fighters were able to run out the clock.
Edwards completed 14 of 25 passes for 107 yards and rushed 10 times for 32 yards and a touchdown. Wesley recorded his second-straight two-touchdown game. Spencer Tears caught seven passes for 49 yards, while Jerminic Smith added 36 yards on four grabs. Royce See led the Fighters' defense with eight tackles and Foster had an interception to go with his six tackles.
Sanders, who was replaced by Bobby Froehlich in the fourth quarter, went nine of 18 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. Crocket caught four passes for 57 yards to go along with his scoring grab. Joshua Robinson rushed for 19 yards and caught three balls for 26 yards. Jones had a monster game for the Oilers with his game-high 11 tackles and sack.
The game was marred by penalties as Frisco was penalized 12 times for 90 yards, and Tulsa was flagged 10 times for 71 yards.
