Steamwheelers 49, Strike Force 47
3/26/23 --
SAN DIEGO, CA - In a thriller which came down to the final seconds, the Quad City Steamwheelers were able to hold off the San Diego Strike Force just long enough to earn their first win of the 2023 Indoor Football League season tonight at Pechanga Arena.
With the win, the Steamwheelers move to 1-1 on the young season. They fell in their home opener last week to the Arizona Rattlers, 60-53. The Strike Force fell to 0-1 on the young season, which happened to be their home opener. This was the first-ever meeting between the teams and the only meeting between them this season.
The Strike Force struck first on quarterback Aaron Aiken's six-yard run up the middle. The Steamwheelers came right back with an 11-yard run from their own quarterback, E.J. Hilliard with 10:57 remaining. Aiken found Marques "Hoodie" Rodgers for a 13-yard touchdown over the middle, but Aedan Johnson's point-after try was no good. It took the Steamwheelers just two plays to respond, which they did with a three-yard run up the middle from Hilliard. The Strike Force turned it over on downs at the Quad City six-yard line late in the opening quarter. The Steamwheelers responded immediately on Hilliard's 42-yard touchdown bomb. Quad City led 21-13 at the end of one.
After Johnson missed a 31-yard field goal by the Strike Force, the Steamwheelers scored on a 13-yard pass from Hilliard to Carrigan with 4:30 left in the second quarter. San Diego scored with 19 seconds remaining when Demry Croft found Kentrez Bell for a 16-yard touchdown toss in the back corner of the end zone. Quad City led 28-20 heading into the break.
Quad City got the ball to open the second half, but Hilliard was intercepted on the first play from scrimmage by San Diego's David Haney. The Strike Force capitalized on the turnover with a 19-yard scoring strike from Croft to Bell. Mike Carrigan scored for the Steamwheelers on a seven-yard run, but the Strike Force came right back on Croft's eight-yard touchdown to Rodgers. Hilliard's 12-yard touchdown run game the 42-34 with 3:21 left in the third quarter. The Steamwheelers led 42-34 after three quarters of play.
Croft's pass was intercepted by Darreon Jackson of Quad City and the Steamwheelers capitalized with a 28-yard run from Jarrod Harrington. San Diego responded with a one-yard plunge from Croft, cutting the deficit to eight points with just over three minutes to play. The Strike Force forced the Steamwheelers to turn it over on downs and got the ball back in with two minutes to play and down by eight. San Diego scored with 20 seconds left when Croft found Rodgers on the right side for the touchdown. Croft attempted the two-point conversion for the tie, but fumbled before crossing the goal line. They had one last chance for the tie, but Johnson's kickoff for the deuce was short. Hilliard took a knee to run out the remainder of the clock.
Hilliard threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another for the Steamwheelers. Carrigan had two of those catches, along with a rushing score, while Harrington also caught a scoring toss.
For the Strike Force, Croft threw for four touchdowns and rushed for one. He came in on San Diego's third series as starter Aaron Aiken moved over to receiver due to injuries among the receiving group. Aiken has a touchdown throw and a rush for a score. Rodgers and Bell caught three and two scoring passes, respectively.
The Steamwheelers will host the Sioux Falls Storm on April 1 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Strike Force will be at home to host the Tucson Sugar Skulls on April 3 at 7:05 p.m. for an IFL version of Monday Night Football. Click for our complete 2023 IFL Schedule.
