Blizzard 44, Barnstormers 25

GREEN BAY, WI - Whether you call it the Ja'rome Johnson and Terrance Smith show, or a defensive statement, it doesn't matter to the Green Bay Blizzard who earned their first win of the season, 44-25, over the Iowa Barnstormers at the Resch Center tonight.
Johnson threw for two touchdowns and rushed for three more, and Smith ran for one score and caught two more in the Blizzard effort. Green Bay moves to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 at home. The Barnstormers, who fell to the Vegas Knight Hawks last week, fall to 0-2 with both losses coming on the road. The teams play twice more this season; May 20 at Green Bay and June 3 at Des Moines, Iowa.
The Blizzard struck first when Smith ran around the left side for a one-yard touchdown. The Barnstormers came back with a 38-yard field goal from Gabriel Rui with 4:57 left in the opening quarter. Johnson's two-yard run extended the Blizzard lead. They held a 13-3 advantage over the Barnstormers at the end of the quarter.
Barnstormers starting quarterback Darius-James Peterson went down to injury and was replaced by Zach Reader, who hit Caleb Smith for a seven-yard touchdown on the opening play of the second quarter before Logan Justus responded with a 23-yard field goal for Green Bay. Rui's 21-yard field goal pulled Iowa to 16-13 with two minutes left in the quarter. Johnson found a wide-open Smith along the right side for an eight-yard score with 18 seconds remaining. The Blizzard held a 23-13 lead heading into intermission.
Johnson put the Blizzard up 30-13 when he rushed one-yard around the right guard into the end zone. Antonio Wimbush took a direct snap and ran in for a one-yard touchdown to tighten the point gap. The Blizzard extended their lead on a six-yard scoring toss from Johnson to Smith. Green Bay led 37-19 after three quarters of play.
Johnson scrambled up the middle for a 12-yard touchdown with 9:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. Reader found Caleb Smith for a three-yard score in the left side of the end zone but, by then the Blizzard were able to run out the clock.
Johnson finished 11 of 17 for 148 with his two touchdowns and no interceptions, while rushing 11 yards for 55 yards and his three scores. Marquise Irvin caught five passes for 78 yards. Terrence Smith had three catches for 46 yards and two scores, and added 30 receiving yards and a touchdown. Jakoby Pappillion recorded nine tackles, three other people players had six. Anthony has had two sacks, while Kyaire Bynum and Dedrick Canty have one apiece. Shaquon Curenton, typically a wide receiver, lined up at defensive back and had an interception.
Reader went 11 of 20 for 87 yards with two touchdowns and a pick, and rushed for 21 yards. Wimbush rushed 11 times for 16 yards and a score, and caught a pair of passes for 14 yards. Laquvionte G onzalez hauled in five passes for 46 yards, while Smith added 39 yards off three receptions to go with his two touchdowns through the air. Ian McBorrough paced the Barnstormers' defense with six tackles.
The Blizzard dominated the yardage race, 237 to 150 for the Barnstormers, and they held advantages in both the rushing and passing games. Green Bay was penalized nine times for 62 yards and Iowa Was flagged three times for 26 yards.
