Steamwheelers 36, Storm 34

MOLINE, IL - In what turned out to be a slugfest, the Quad City Steamwheelers held off the Sioux Falls Storm, 36-34, at Vibrant Arena tonight.
With the win, the Steamwheelers improve their record to 2-1 and picked up their first home win of the season. It was the season opener for the Storm, who fall to 0-1. The teams will meet twice more this season; April 29 at Sioux Falls and on May 12 back at Moline, Illinois.
Quad City struck first on E.J. Hilliard's six-yard touchdown toss to CJ Windham three minutes into the game. After a turnover on downs from the Storm, Chase Allbaugh put the Steamwheelers up 10-0 with a 28-yard field goal. That score would last through the end of the quarter.
Lorenzo Brown, Jr. rushed in from a yard away to put the Storm on the board early in the second quarter. The Steamwheelers came right back when Hilliard found Keyvan Rudd for a 22-yard diving-catch touchdown. Sioux Falls' Tony Tate returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards for a touchdown which kept the Storm in reach and down by just four. Antwan Hadley gave the Storm another possession after recovering the onside kick. However, Brown was intercepted by Darreon Jackson deep in Storm territory. Allbaugh tacked on a field goal to put the Steamwheelers up 20-13 with 2:08 remaining in the half. The Storm knotted the game on Tony Tate's three-yard touchdown rush with seven seconds to go. The teams went into halftime with tied 20-20.
Sioux Falls took it's first lead of the game early in the third quarter with a give-yard run from Brown, but Quad City came right back on Hilliard's 35-yard touchdown toss to Rudd. Malik Duncan of the Steamwheelers took Tate down in the end zone for a safety at the 3:54 mark of the quarter. Quad City led 36-26 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Steamwheelers extended their lead early in the fourth on Hilliard's nine-yard touchdown pass Windham. Lorenzo Brown, Jr. rushed for a one-yard touchdown, then through the two-point conversion pass to Donnie Corely, Jr., but Quad City was able to run out the clock.
Hilliard completed 14 of 22 passes for 139 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Rudd and Windham racked up 63 and 30 yards, respectively, and had a pair of scoring grabs apiece. Jarrod Harrington caught seven balls for 33 yards. Marquis Hendrix paced the Steamwheelers with 10 tackles, while Jackson and Kendrick Gladney, Jr. each had an interception.
Brown went six for 20 for 53 yards and two interceptions. He also rushed for 29 yards and three touchdowns. Cole Thurness led Storm receivers with three catches for 26 yards. James Brown's six tackles led the defense and he shared a sack with Jaylen Abdul Karim.
The Steamwheelers had an advantage in total yards, 157 to 119, with a 139 to 53 advantage in the passing game. Quad City was flagged 11 times for 91 yards, while Sioux Falls was penalized seven times for 83 yards.
