Pirates 59, Panthers 52

WORCESTER, MA - In what amounted largely to a shootout, it was defense late in the fourth quarter which propelled the Massachusetts Pirates to a 59-52 win over the visiting Bay Area Panthers today at the DCU Center.
Massachusetts improves to 2-0 on the season with both wins coming at home. Bay Area falls to 1-1. This is the only meeting between the teams this season. The Pirates defeated the Panthers last season in San Jose, California.
Massachusetts struck first with a 41-yard field goal from Josh Gable. After getting the ball back, the Pirates scored on a 12-yard flip around the right side from Anthony Russo to Jimmie Robinson midway through the first quarter. Bay Area got on the board courtesy a six-yard run from quarterback Dalton Sneed late in the quarter. Robinson returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards for a Pirates touchdown. Justin Rankin scored on a 19-yard run for the Panthers. The Pirates led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Russo found Owens for a 20-yard touchdown which put the Pirates up 23-14 early in the second quarter. Sneed found Arthur Jackson III for a seven-yard score for Bay Area. Sneed drew the Panthers to within two points at 23-21 in the middle of the quarter with a 14-yard run, but Russo linked up with Isaac Zico for a score for the Pirates. After Sneed's touchdown toss to JT Stokes, Marquise Bridges of the Panthers picked off Russo in the end zone. Bay Area capitalized with a 34-yard field goal from Kevin Goessling. The Panthers led 38-30 heading into intermission.
Massachusetts forced Bay Area to turn it over on downs on the first possession of the third quarter. They capitalized on the opportunity with Robinson's two-yard run up the middle. Russo hit Darren Carrington for the two-point conversion which tied the game 38-38 heading at the midpoint of the third. The Panthers countered with a seven-yard touchdown toss from Sneed to Stokes which allowed them to retake the lead. Russo fount Carrington open in the shallow end of the end zone to tie the game. The teams were locked in a 45-45 tie heading into the fourth quarter.
Bay Area went up by a touchdown when Sneed found Stokes for a 41-yard diving touchdown snag. Massachusetts once again tied it on an eight-yard strike from Russo to Owens. The Pirates forced the Panthers to turn it over on downs on the next possession at the 12 yard line. Robinson run up the middle for five yards to put the Pirates up 59-52 with 4:47 remaining. Bay Area drove into Pirate territory, but turned it over on downs with 33 seconds left. From there, the Pirates were able to run out the clodk and preserve the win.
Both teams are on byes next week. The Pirates will visit the Frisco Fighters on April 15 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Panthers will host the Tucson Sugar Skulls on April 16 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for our complete 2023 IFL Schedule.
