Portland Thunder defensive back Varmah Sonie has put together a very nice rookie season by Arena Football League standards. He's been good enough that he should be in the conversation for Rookie of the Year. The rookie from the University of Northern Iowa is the subject of a 20 Questions interview by Kristi Rose of AFL Field Pass. The following is that transcript:
By KRISTI ROSE
Portland Thunder defensive back Varmah Sonie leads all AFL rookies with 76.5 tackles, seven interceptions and 23 pass breakups this season. AFNation’s Kristi Rose recently caught up with the former Northern Iowa standout to see what makes him tick in the latest edition of “20 Questions!”
KRISTI ROSE: When did you first start playing football?
VARMAH SONIE: I started playing football when I was in the third grade.
KR: Did you play any other sports?
VS: I played basketball, I ran track, and I played baseball… I tried every sport. I played baseball for a year in sixth grade, but I let that go. I stuck with basketball, football, and track throughout high school.
KR: What is one of your favorite activities outside of football?
VS: Watching movies is definitely something I love to do in my spare time.
KR: What did you want to be when you grew up?
VS: I probably wanted to be an NFL player. I’m from Minnesota, so I grew up watching the Minnesota Vikings.
KR: What is your favorite time of the year?
VS: July. My birthday is July 8th, and July 4th is a lot of fun, so it’s a great time of the year.
KR: Who is your favorite musician or artist right now?
VS: Drake is definitely my current favorite.
KR: Do you have a favorite TV show?
VS: My favorite TV show would have to be Martin.
KR: If you could meet anyone, who would you meet?
VS: I’d meet Jesus.
KR: What is your least favorite form of transportation?
VS: I hate traveling by bus and being around all those people.
KR: Would you rather go skiing or go to the beach?
VS: I love going to the beach.
KR: If you had to eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
VS: I would pick chicken because there are many different things you can do with it.
KR: Where would you live if you could live anywhere?
VS: I’d pick Florida where it’s warm.
KR: Are there any places you currently want to travel to?
VS: Maybe California or Florida. They both look beautiful.
KR: What is the No. 1 most played song on your iPod right now?
VS: Right now it’s “Pills N Potions” by Nicki Minaj. I love it.
KR: What kind of movie would you watch if given the option?
VS: I would watch a comedy, especially like the Kevin Hart stand-ups.
KR: What is the best gift you’ve ever been given?
VS: I’d have to say, there was this little football that my mom gave me when I was little, and that was the best.
KR: Who inspires you?
VS: My family is a big inspiration.
KR: What football moments from your career stick out to you?
VS: My first game against the Iowa Barnstormers sticks out – just getting to go in there and getting my first career interception. Winning Mr. Football in Minnesota coming out of high school in my senior year was another big moment for me.
KR: What is your favorite part of playing in Portland?
VS: The fans. They come and support us even though our record isn’t as good as it necessarily should be.
KR: What is your favorite part of the AFL?
VS: Being able to play football again while guarding players one-on-one. It really shows how good you are out on the field.
