SIOUX FALLS, SD - Lorenzo Brown, Jr. and company set the tone early and never took their feet off the gas in a Sioux Falls Storm - win over the visiting Iowa Barnstormers tonight at Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The Storm pick up their first win of the season in their 2023 home opener. They now stand at 1-1 on the season with both of their game results coming in Eastern Conference matchups. The Barnstormers fall to 0-3 with all three of their losses coming on the road. They are now 0-2 in Eastern Conference play. The teams meet twice more this season; May 26 and July 8 with both game at Des Moines.
The Storm's Nathan Ford intercepted the Barnstormers' Zach Reader on the opening play of the game giving the Storm the ball in Iowa territory. They capitalized on the turnover with a four-yard touchdown run from Tony Tate. The Barnstormers were forced to attempt a 62-yard field goal (the closest thing to a punt in the indoor game) giving the Storm the ball back at their own 20. Sioux Falls quarterback Lorenzo Brown, Jr. fumbled with Iowa recovering at their own nine. The Barnstormers got on the board with a 22-yard field goal from Gabriel Rui. After Tate's long kickoff return, Brown rushed in from a yard out to put the Storm up by 10. Sioux Falls led 13-3 at the end of one.
Iowa turned the ball over on downs early in the quarter, giving the Sioux Falls offense another opportunity. The Storm went up 19-3 on Dwight Blakey's 11-yard touchdown catch from Brown with 8:45 left in the quarter. They added another score three minutes later on a 10-yard scoring run from Bryson Denley. The Storm led 26-10 at halftime.
Sioux Falls added to the lead early in the third quarter on Blakey's 10-yard touchdown up the middle and into the end zone. The Storm got the ball back courtesy of Antwan Hadley's interception of Reader. After the Storm turned over the ball on downs, Reader was intercepted by Storm defensive back James Brown who returned it 25 yards for another Sioux Falls touchdown. Iowa got back into the end zone when Reader pitched the ball out to Bralon Robinson around the left side. The Storm led 40-18 heading into the final quarter.
The Storm went up 47-18 on a two-yard run around the left side from Brown. Caleb Smith added a score for the Barnstormers with a one-yard touchdown run to the right side with just under six minutes remaining. The Storm came right back, scoring on a one-yard run up the middle and into the end zone with just a little over a minute remaining. The Barnstormers had the ball one last time, but were unable to convert their drive into points.
Brown completed nine of 12 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. He also led the Storm in rushing with 45 yards and two touchdowns. Denley had 19 yards to go with his two scoring runs. Blakey caught four passes for 38 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another score. Clifton Duck, LaRonji Vason-McCoy and Eugene Ford led the Storm defense with 12, 10 and eight tackles, respectively. Ford added an interception to his stat line, and Brown and Hadley had an interception apiece.
Reader, making his first start in place of Darius-James Peterson, completed 22 of 27 throws for 148 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. Peterson suffered a season-ending injury in the Barnstormers' loss at the Quad City Steamwheelers last week. Smith rushed for 22 yards and a touchdown. Laquvionte Gonzalez caught a game-high nine passes for 61 yards. Dashawn Benton led the Barnstormers with six tackles. Eric Johnson Allen Edwards each had five tackles. Christopher Robinson tallied two sacks on Brown.
Iowa outgained Sioux Falls in total offense, 167 yards to 147. They had an edge in receiving yards, 148 to 83, while Sioux Falls held the advantage in rushing, 83 yards to 47. The Barnstormers were penalized 13 times for 95 yards. The Storm were flagged just once in the contest for 13 yards. That penalty didn't come until the four-second mark of the fourth quarter.
The Storm will host the Green Bay Blizzard on April 16 with kickoff set for 3:05 p.m. The Barnstormers have a bye next week, but will be back in action when they host the Tulsa Oilers in their home opener on April 22 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff.
