GREEN BAY, WI - In an uncommon set of back-two-back games between two teams, the Sioux Falls Storm got a little payback against the Green Bay Blizzard last night. The Storm, who fell to the Blizzard, 47-41, came out on top in this one to the tune of 55-47 over their hosts last night at the Resch Center.
Sioux Falls has now won 22-2 over the Blizzard in two dozen games of the current Indoor Football league. The Storm move to 2-2 on the season and picked up their first win on the road. The Blizzard fell to 2-3 and 1-2 at home. The teams play once more this season; June 23 at Sioux Falls.
The Storm got on the scoreboard first courtesy a 50-yard field goal from nick Jaworski in the games opening minutes. Marquise Irvin's 14-yard touchdown catch from Ja'rome Johnson gave the Blizzard a brief lead before Lorenzo Brown, Jr. rushed in from five yards out with 1:25 remaining in the opening quarter. The Storm led 10-6 at the end of the first.
The second quarter was much of a back-and-forth between the teams. A four-yard run from Johnson put the Blizzard back on top. But, Brown's second scoring run of the night a four-yarder, reclaimed the lead for the Storm. Terrence Smith scored on a four-yard run for the Blizzard midway through the second quarter, but Sioux Falls came right back with a seven-yard run from Draysean Hudson and the Storm were up 23-20 with just under five minutes to play. A one-yard run from Smith gave the Blizzard back the lead with 33 second left, but Brown hit Donnie Corley, Jr. for a three-yard score at the end of the half. Sioux Falls led 29-27 at the break.
Sioux Falls scored the first point of the second half when Brown rushed in from a yard away midway through the third quarter. Green Bay came back on the very next play when Johnson scampered for a 41-yard touchdown. Brown found Corley again, this time for a six-yard touchdown with just under three minutes to go in the quarter. Johnson's 29-yard touchdown toss to Irvin pulled the Blizzard to within a point at 41-40 with 55 seconds left in the quarter, but the Storm's Bryson Denley returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards to once again extend the Sioux Falls lead. The Storm held a 49-40 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Green Bay wasn't finished, however. Johnson found Shaquon Curenton for an eight-yard touchdown three minutes into the final quarter. Brown's two-yard scoring run with 6:35 remaining proved to be all the Storm needed to come away with the win.
Brown went 13 of 16 for 121 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed 17 times for 44 yards and four scores. Denley added seven rushes for 37 yards. Corley's two touchdown grabs came off five receptions for 44 yards,, and Cole Thurness added three grabs for 41 yards. Eric Jackson and James Brown paced the Storm defense with 8.5 and seven tackles, respectively, and Eugene Ford picked off two passes.
Johnson completed 12 of 19 passes for 162 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He added a game-high 120 yards along with two touchdowns on the ground. Irvin caught three balls for 50 yards to go along with his two scores. Smith, who rushed for 26 yards and two touchdowns, caught four passes for 47 yards. Trevaughn McNeill's 8.5 tackles led the Green Bay defense.
Green Bay outgained Sioux Falls, 310 yards to 215 overall. The Blizzard had a 44-yard edge in the rushing game and 41-yard edge in the passing game. The Blizzard were penalized nine times for 86 yards, while the Storm were flagged five times for 38 yards.
The Storm will host the Quad City Steamwheelers on April 29 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. After a bye week, the Blizzard will be at home to host the Massachusetts Pirates on May 5 for a 4:05 p.m. kickoff. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for our complete 2023 IFL Schedule.
