PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - Garrett Kettle's two-yard touchdown, coupled with Brandon Fischer's extra point, with just under three minutes remaining proved to be the difference as the Northern Arizona Wranglers pushed back the Bay Area Panthers tonight to take sole possession of first place in the Western Conference standings.
Northern Arizona improved to 5-2 on the season. They're looking to repeat as IFL champions and this win is a signature one of the season. The Panthers fall into second place in the conference with a 4-3 record. This game was largely billed as the IFL's "Game of the Week" given its playoff seeding implications.
This was the second meeting between the teams this season. The Panthers defeated the Wranglers 47-13 on April 23 at San Jose. Northern Arizona leads the overall series between the teams, 4-1 (3-0 at home and 1-1 on the road).
Northern Arizona received the opening kickoff, but Brandon Fischer missed wide right on a 25-yard field goal attempt. Bay Area struck first on a 36-yard run up the middle from Justin Rankin. The Wranglers came right back with a 14-yard touchdown from Garrett Kettle to Ryan Wisniewski, who leaped backward over the wall to make the scoring catch. With the Panthers driving, Daniel Wright of the Wranglers picked off Dalton Sneed's tipped pass in the end zone to give Northern Arizona the ball at its own six. In two plays, Kettle fired a five-yard touchdown to Glen Gibbons, Jr. to put the Wranglers in front by a touchdown with just under four minutes remaining in the opening quarter. They attempted an onside kick, which was recovered by Bay Area. Northern Arizona led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Bay Area pulled to within a point on Sneed's option run up the middle three minutes into the second quarter. The Wranglers settled for a 30-yard field goal try from Fischer, but the kick went wide left. Sneed found JT Stokes for a 13-yard diving-over-the-wall touchdown snag to give Bay Area a six-point lead with 38 seconds remaining in the first half. The Wranglers took a one-point lead with 2.3 seconds remaining to go into the break with a 21-20 advantage.
The Panthers took the opening kickoff of the second half and converted on a two-yard touchdown toss to the left side from Sneed to Stokes, and Bay Area was in the lead once again. Northern Arizona responded with a 24-yard scoring strike from Kettle to Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman with 5:28 left in the third quarter. The Panthers retook the lead on Sneed's 16-yard touchdown toss to Stokes in the right side of the end zone. The Panthers took a 34-28 lead into the final quarter.
The Wranglers turned over the ball on downs on their next possession, giving the Panthers the ball just inside Wranglers territory. Bay area was unable to capitalize as Aedan Johnson missed his 28-yard field goal attempt. Northern Arizona took a 35-34 lead on a two-yard run around the right guard from Kettle with 2:47 remaining in the contest. Johnson lined up for a 34-yard attempt to put the Panthers in the lead with 39.4 seconds remaining, but the kick went wide left. The Wranglers were able to run out the clock to preserve the win.
Kettle finished 14 of 24 for 194 yards with three touchdowns and no picks. He also rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown. Chiaokhiao-Bowman caught four passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed five times for 28 yards. Wisniewski had five catches for 58 yards and a score, and Glen Gibbons, Jr. had three grabs for 38 yards and a touchdown. Dorian Walker and Terik Miller had six and five tackles, respectively, and Wright had an interception for the Wranglers defense.
Sneed went 16 of 25 for 155 yards, three touchdowns and an interception for the Panthers. He also rushed for 44 yards and a score. Rankin accumulated 49 yards off 10 carries for a touchdown. Stokes finished with five catches for 55 yards and three scored, and Curtell Haywood caught four passes for 42 yards. Bill Atkins led the Bay Area defense with 7.5 tackles, and Trevaughn Grant had a sack.
The Wranglers had a slight advantage in total offense, 266 yards to 248. The most significant part of that game with a 32-yard edge in the passing game. The Panthers were penalized nine times for 99 yards, while the Wranglers were flagged five times for 39 yards.
