Storm 77, Barnstormers 26
5/26/23 --
DES MOINES, IA - Lorenzo Brown, Jr. tossed five touchdown passes -- four to Donnie Corley -- to lead the Sioux Falls Storm to a convincing 77-26 win tonight over the Iowa Barnstormers at Wells Fargo Center.
The Storm move to 5-4 on the season and 4-4 in conference play. They are solidly in the playoff race. The Storm's 77 points were the most scored by the team this season, and the most allowed by the Barnstormers defense in a game this season. The Barnstormers fell to 1-8 and dropped their second straight. Sioux Falls leads the overall series between the teams 14-8 (8-3 home, 6-5 away). The Storm won the first of the three matches between the teams this season, 54-24, at Sioux Falls. They match up once more; on July 8 at Des Moines.
Sioux Falls struck first on Xavier Jackson's six-yard touchdown rush. The Storm added to the lead when Lorenzo Brown, Jr. found Donnie Corley, Jr. for a 33-yard scoring strike. The Storm led 14-0 at the end of the opening quarter.
After a blocked Barnstormers field goal, Jackson struck again; this time on a two-yard rush up the middle. Iowa got on the board when running back Antonio Wimbush, who took the direct snap and ran around the right guard and into the end zone early in the second quarter. Jackson put the Storm up 28-6 with just under six minutes left in the opening half with a one-yard trot up the middle. After Nick Gauna's squib kick touched Joe Bastante of the Barnstormers, Corley recovered the ball to put the Storm offense back on the field. They capitalized with a 13-yard touchdown run from Draysean Hudson. With the Barnstormers driving deep into Storm territory with under a minute remaining, Zack Reader was intercepted by Eugene Ford of the Storm. Sioux Falls responded immediately with a 33-yard touchdown bomb from Brown to Hudson with 34 seconds to go in the half. Sioux Falls led 42-6 at the break.
Brown connected with Corley for a 45-yard touchdown to extend the Barnstormer's lead to 49-6 just a couple of minutes into the third quarter. The barnstormers responded immediately with a 25-yard touchdown strike to Caleb Smith. Wimbush rushed around the left side for the two-point conversion. Brown hit Jackson on a catch-and-run for a 22-yard score and once again the Storm led by six touchdowns just five minutes into the third. Reader stopped the bleeding temporarily with a bootleg around the right side for the Iowa score. Brown found Corley in the back right corner of the end zone to increase the Storm lead. Sioux Falls held a 63-20 advantage heading into the fourth.
The Barnstormers turned over the ball on downs and put the Storm offense back on the field at the Iowa 20. Backup quarterback Seth Collins tossed a seven-yard strike to Corley. Henry Ogala, Iowa's backup quarterback, engineered a drive for the Barnstormers which was capped by a two-yard run from Wimbush. Gauna missed a 40-yard field goal wide left, which was the first time the Storm failed to score on the night. Byron Edwards intercepted Ogala's deep though to give the Storm some time to run out the clock. Instead, they drove down field and scored on Jalen James' four-yard touchdown run around the right side. Time ran out on Iowa's chance to add more points to the board.
Brown finished 10 of 14 for 194 yards to go with his five touchdowns. Jackson compiled 72 yards on 12 carries in addition to a trio of touchdowns on the ground and one through the air. Corley caught six passes for 116 yards with his four scores. Edwards led the Storm defense with 10 tackles, while Clifton Duck and LaRonji Vason-McCoy had seven apiece. Edwards and Ford tallied interceptions for the Storm defense.
Reader went 11 of 26 for 146 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Wimbush sinished with 19 net rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Smith added 73 yards off five catches to co with his touchdown snag, and Lane Canny had four catches for 54 yards. Tyrell Pearson tallied five tackles to lead the Barnstormers on the defensive side of the ball.
Sioux Falls led in total offense, 343 yards to 245 for Iowa. The bulk of that came in the rushing game, where the Storm outgained their hosts by 71 yards. The Barnstormers held an advantage in time of possession by 5:10. Iowa was penalized seven times for 62 yards, while Sioux Falls was flagged six times for 45 yards.
The Barnstormers will host the Green Bay Blizzard on June 3 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Storm have a bye next week, but will be back in action as they host the Frisco Fighters on June 10 for a 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for our complete 2023 IFL Schedule.
