RIO RANCHO, NM - The Duke City Gladiators took another step toward a playoff run as they held off the defending champion Northern Arizona Wranglers tonight at Rio Rancho Events Center, 47-40.
With the win, the Gladiators improve to 4-5 on the season and are just a single game out of a playoff spot with six regular season games left on the season. Duke City also completed the season sweep over the Wranglers. The Gladiators won 43-35 at Prescott Valley on March 25 -- the season opener for both teams. The Wranglers fell to 5-4 and in a tie for third place in the Western Conference standings.
Duke City quarterback Charles McCullum completed 12 of 16 passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions, and rushed for another score. Tim Whitfield rushed 14 times for 49 yards. Gary Brown led the Gladiators in receiving with six catches for 85 yards and three touchdowns. Jimmy Thompson recorded nine tackles, while Nazir Streater had seven. Roderick Chapman and Dexter Reese had two and one interceptions, respectively.
Gerrett Kettle went 19 of 26 for 117 yards with two touchdowns and three picks for Northern Arizona. He also rushed for a pair of scores. Glen Gibbons, Jr. had 10 catches for 43 yards, and also rushed for two touchdowns. Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman scored on both his receptions, which accumulated 28 yards. Jus Whisenhunt and Tramond Lofton led the Wranglers' defense with eight and seven tackles, respectively.
Duke City had a 178-to-142-yard advantage in total yards with the major difference coming in the passing game with an edge of 11 yards. The Gladiators were penalized seven times for 46 yards, while the Strike Force were flagged twice for eight yards.
