It was announced early this week that as the Thunder head into their first playoff game, they would be without standout wide receiver/kick returner Duane Brooks and rookie of the year candidate Varmah Sonie due to injuries they sustained in the regular season finale, July 26, against the Spokane Shock.
It was announced Tuesday that the Thunder also will be without defensive lineman Jake McDonough and defensive end Donte Paige-Moss, who have accepted training camp invites from the Washington Redskins and Indianapolis Colts of the NFL, respectively.
The 5-11 Thunder open up the playoffs in Phoenix against the 15-3 Arizona Rattlers, Sunday, August 3 at 3 p.m. The game will be available on CSNNW, streaming through ESPN3 and on the radio at 750 The Game.
This will leave the Thunder lean on the defensive side of the ball. As it stands now, the active defensive roster consists of the following (via the roster on the team's official website):
DL - Antron Dillon, Marquis Jackson, K.C. Obi
LB - Brandon Tett
DB - Eric Crocker, Okechukwu Okoroha, Bryce Peila, Dwight McLean
The only spot to fill is the other linebacker spot, though Peila has played quite a bit of Jack LB this season. He could be moved back to that position while Okororah, who has played sparingly since being assigned to the team on July 10, could get the start at DB.
It should also be noted that wide receiver Jamar Howard filled in after Sonie went down with his injury in the first half against the Shock. Howard even picked off an Erik Meyer pass in the second half. Howard is an integral part of the offense and leads the Thunder in receiving over the past four games.
No announcement has been made as to whether the Thunder will add players to fill the roster. McDonough and Paige-Moss have been placed on league suspension (similar to being released, though the Thunder could have an opportunity to have them reassigned to the team prior to Sunday's playoff game should one or both be released from their NFL team's training camp).
EDIT (8/1/14, 1:05 p.m.): Paige-Moss will be back with the Thunder for the playoff opener, as the team reactivated him from league suspension.
