Panthers 44, Sugar Skulls 42

TUCSON, AZ - The Bay Area Panthers rallied from a 36-30 fourth quarter deficit to pull away from the Tucson Sugar Skulls tonight, 44-42, at the Tucson Convention Center.
Dalton Sneed tossed a touchdown to Curtell Haywood, and Justin Rankin scored on an eight-yard run as the Panthers gained sole possession of first place in the Western Conference playoffs. They move to 6-3 on the season. The Sugar Skulls fell to 4-4 on the season and slip into fourth place in the standings. The top four teams in each conference make the post season.
The Sugar Skulls defeated the Panthers in the teams' first meeting this season, 34-30, at San Jose. Tucson leads the overall series 3-1 and are 1-1 at home.
Sneed finished 16 of 22 throws for 205 yards and three touchdowns, while Justin Rankin rushed 14 times for 59 yards and three scores. Nih-jer Jackson caught seven balls for 110 yards and a pair of scores. Trae Meadows and Antwon Kincaid each totaled nine tackles for the Bay Area defense. Kincaid and Bon Stevens, Jr. posted an interception apiece.
Ramone Atkins completed six of 14 passes for 75 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Atkins also rushed for 68 yards (off 13 carries) and two touchdowns. Rankin added 68 yards off 12 rushes to his three scores on the ground. Carrington Thompson, Sr. hauled in a pair of passes for 46 yards and a score. Traivon Bryant's eight tackles led the Sugar Skulls' defense, and Maurice Jackson tallied two sacks.
The Panthers 258 yards of offense to 234 for the Sugar Skulls. Tucson held a 90-yard advantage in the rushing game, while Bay Area held a 130-yard edge in the receiving game. Bay Area was penalized seven times for 51 yards and Tucson was flagged six times for 86 yards.
The Panthers will host the Duke City Gladiators on June 3 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. The Sugar Skulls will make their way to Nevada to battle the Sugar Skulls for a 7:05 p.m. kickoff. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for our complete 2023 IFL Schedule.
