WORCESTER, MA - Anthony Russo threw for a career-high eight touchdowns as the Massachusetts Pirates pulled away from the Frisco Fighters in the fourth quarter tonight by the tune of a 72-54 margin.
The Pirates' win tightens up the Eastern Conference playoff picture as they are now tied with the Quad City Steamwheelers for second. That puts them one game behind the Fighters. The Steamwheelers hold the tiebreaker over the Pirates after week 12's action due to higher conference win percentage.
Massachusetts improved to 7-3 and a perfect 5-0 at home. The Fighters fell to 8-2 with both losses coming on the road. The Fighters won the first matchup between the teams, 56-39, at Frisco on April 15. The Pirates lead the overall series, including playoffs, 4-2 (2-0 home, 2-2 away).
Russo finished 12 of 16 for 201 yards with the aforementioned eight touchdowns and an interception. Isaac Zico caught four passes for 895 yards and two touchdowns. Thomas Owens added five grabs for 66 yards and three scores, while Darren Carrington II had touchdowns on both of his receptions. Jimmie Robinson added a touchdown reception to his 69 rushing yards and score on the ground. Calvin Bundage led the Pirates' defense with 8.5 tackles and an interception, and Chris Ingram also had a pick.
TJ Edwards went nine of 23 for 90 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 73 yards and four scores. Martez Carter rushed 16 times for 134 touchdowns. Jerminic Smith led the receiving group with three catches for 35 yards and a touchdowns. Michael LoVett tallied 5.5 tackles for the Fighters defense. Zacoven Henderson contributed a sack and Shaq Bond an interception.
Frisco had 291 yards of total offense compared to Massachusetts' 260. The Fighters' dominated the rushing game, 210-64 yards, while the Pirates held the advantage in the passing game, 196 yards to 81. The Pirates were flagged nine times for 112 yards, and the Fighters were penalized eight times for 55 yards.
