Blizzard 45, Steamwheelers 38
6/9/23 --
GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard entered Friday night's showdown against Quad City Steamwheelers barely outside the playoff picture, with tonight being the last home game of the season for them. Green Bay was successful in giving its fans one last home win, outlasting a late Quad City rally to earn a 45-38 victory.
Quad City got the ball first and led a drive as far as the Green Bay 11-yard line. A stop on third down forced the Steamwheelers to run Chase Allbaugh for a 26-yard field goal, which he hit to open the game's scoring. Green Bay's first drive also hinged on a third down deep in opponent territory, with the Blizzard converting on a three-yard touchdown pass from Max Meylor to Stephen Newbold. The Blizzard then forced three straight incompletions from E.J. Hilliard, and the ensuing 60+ yard field goal "attempt" by Allbaugh sailed out of bounds down the left sideline. Just three drives were completed in the first 15 minutes - one touchdown, one field goal, and one defensive stand - with the score 7-3 Blizzard after one quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Meylor connected on his second touchdown pass of the game, finding Marquise Irvin from six yards out. Another lengthy Quad City drive would end up as the Steamwheelers' first visit to the endzone, with Hilliard finding big-play specialist Keyvan Rudd on a wide-open three yard pass at the right corner of the endzone. The attempt for two failed, keeping Quad City down 14-9. Green Bay found its third touchdown in as many possessions thanks to Terrence Smith's two-yard rushing score. Quad City's next possession would take play into the one-minute warning, with Hilliard finding Shane Simpson on a nice 14-yard catch and run scoring play. The Blizzard had just enough time to squeak out one more touchdown before the end of the half; Meylor's one-yard plunge gave his Green Bay squad a 28-16 halftime lead, with first possession of the ball upcoming for the third quarter.
The Blizzard carried their perfect offensive streak into the second half, as Max Meylor's second rushing score of the game (three yards) extended the lead to 35-16. The Steamwheelers found their way into Blizzard territory on their next possession, but four straight Hilliard incompletions stalled the drive and awarded the ball back to Green Bay. Terrence Smith would provide the capitalizing play on an eight-yard run to close out the third quarter, with Green Bay holding a commanding 42-16 advantage.
Needing a surge of momentum to climb back into the game, Hilliard once again found Rudd on a hard-earned 18-yard touchdown pass, with Rudd overpowering defenders on his way across the goal line. Hilliard successfully ran in a two-point conversion to cut the lead down to 18 points. Quad City finally earned a pivotal defensive stop, forcing a long field goal attempt by Logan Justus to miss wide right out of bounds. Four plays later, Hilliard found Jarren McGaw on a screen pass for a four-yard touchdown. Another Hilliard rush for two points on the conversion suddenly brought them back to within ten points, technically one score game territory. A great kickoff return by Newbold deep into Steamwheeler territory would ultimately go for naught, with the 29-yard field goal attempt by Justus blocked, giving Quad City an opportunity to inch even closer. After a 3rd-and-14 pass from Hilliard to Jones was overturned after initially being ruled a catch, a deep 4th-down pass from Hilliard was broken up, intended for Jeremiah Holloman. That gave the Blizzard the ball back with an opportunity to close the game out. They did so, not with a touchdown, but a 27-yard field goal by Justus to increase the Green Bay lead to 45-32. Quad City needed a quick score and found the endzone within three plays. Hilliard's 22-yard pass to Tyler Jones brought Quad City back within seven, but a failed two-point conversion kept the deficit there. Allbaugh's onside kick attempt was controlled by Green Bay's Marquise Irvin to end the Steamwheelers' furious rally. Valiant as the comeback bid was, Quad City came short, with Green Bay winning 45-38.
In the win, Max Meylor connected on ten of his 19 pass attempts, totaling 118 yards and two touchdown passes. He added eight carries for 24 yards and two additional scores. Terrence Smith also added two touchdowns on the ground (eight carries for 14 yards) and secured all three of his passing game targets for 44 yards. Shaq Curenton led the Blizzard in receiving yards with 58 (four catches on five targets), while Stephen Newbold and Marquise Irvin each had one receiving score apiece.
E.J. Hilliard went 18-of-33 for 183 yards and five touchdowns passes, but was limited as a rusher with 13 scoreless yards on just four attempts. Shane Simpson, who left the game in the second quarter with a non-contact lower body injury, led Quad City in rushing (three carries for 12 yards) and contributed six catches on eight targets for 53 yards and a touchdown. Keyvan Rudd was targeted nine times, with five catches for 53 yards and two touchdowns.
The win brings Green Bay above .500 with a 6-5 record. If Sioux Falls loses to Frisco, Green Bay would slide into the fourth place spot in the Eastern Conference. Quad City drops to a record of 7-4, which drops them from second place in the East momentarily (Massachusetts is a half-game ahead now at 7-3 and hosts Vegas tomorrow night).
With the victory, the Blizzard have evened up the season series, and re-gained the all-time series lead in the teams' IFL era (four games to three). One final meeting remains, which will take place at Vibrant Arena at the MARK on July 8th.
The Steamwheelers will be on the road to face the Iowa Barnstormers on Saturday June 17 for a 5:05 p.m. After a bye in week 14, the Blizzard will visit the Sioux Falls Storm on Friday June 23 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time.
