Sugar Skulls 47, Gladiators 43
6/10/23 --
TUCSON, AZ - In a back-and-forth battle all game long, it was Ramone Atkins' 14-yard touchdown pass to Carrington Thompson, Sr. with 16 seconds remaining which proved to be the difference as the Tucson Sugar Skulls turned back the visiting Duke City Gladiators tonight, 47-43, at Tucson Convention Center.
The win solidifies the Sugar Skulls spot at number three in the Western Conference playoff race. Should the Bay Area Panthers defeat the Arizona Rattlers tomorrow, Tucson would move into second in the conference following week 13's slate of Indoor Football League action. The top four teams in each conference and the top two earn home-field advantage in the first round. The Sugar Skulls now stand at 6-4 with five games left.
Duke City falls to 4-7, but remains in the hunt for a playoff spot, at least mathematically. The Gladiators will need to string together some wins over their last four games and get some help from elsewhere in the conference.
This is the second of three games between the teams this season. Duke City took the first game, 56-49, at Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The teams are back in Tucson on July 8 in week 17. The Sugar Skulls now lead the overall series between the teams, 5-2, including a 4-0 mark at home and 1-2 on the road.
Atkins, who engineered a game-winning drive for the second straight week, finished 17 of 23 for 164 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Benjamin Jones finished with 38 yards on the ground off nine carries with a pair of touchdowns. Thompson caught seven balls for 59 yards and two touchdowns. Dequan Dudley and Frank Brown also hauled in touchdown tosses. Melik Owens' had eight tackles and two sacks, and Traivon Bryant added seven.
Charles McCullum completed 16 of 24 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for another score for the Gladiators. Gary Brown caught eight of those balls for 103 yards with two touchdowns, and Xavier Amey had a scoring grab. Greg Dent, Jr. and Kam Prewitt led the Duke City defense with six tackles apiece, and Claude Davis recorded two sacks.
Tucson had an edge in overall yards, 227 to 212. Each team was penalized six times, the Sugar Skulls for 38 yards and the Gladiators for 23. The Gladiators had a 14-second advantage in time of possession which, while not always a factor in a game's result, is an indicator of just how close the contest was.
The Gladiators will be at home on June 17 to face the Arizona Rattlers with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Sugar Skulls will host the San Diego Strike force on June 17 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for our complete 2023 IFL Schedule.
