Fighters 37, Wranglers 29
6/17/23 --
PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - TJ Edwards rushed for five touchdowns and Martez Carter had 126 yards on the ground, but it was the defense which came up big as the Frisco Fighters held off the Northern Arizona Wranglers, 37-29, tonight at Findlay Toyota Center.
Frisco moves to a league-best 10-2 on the season and retains sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference. Should they finish the regular season atop the division, it will guarantee home field advantage throughout the conference playoffs. The Fighters also became the first team in the IFL to clinch a playoff spot with the win. The Wranglers fell to 6-6 and are in fourth place in the Western Conference. The top four teams in each conference earn a playoff spot.
The Fighters now lead the overall season, 2-0. They took down the Wranglers 33-30 at Frisco in the first-ever meeting between the teams on July 24, 2021. This is the only meeting between the teams this season.
Frisco started the opening drive at their own five-yard line and marched 45 yards for the opening score of the game, a three-yard run around the right side from TJ Edwards. The Fighters converted two fourth downs on the eight-minute drive. Northern Arizona countered when Garrett Kettle found Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman in the shallow left corner of the end zone for a 10-yard score to tie the contest at 6-6 with 4:34 remaining in the opening quarter. That remained the score through the end of the quarter.
Edwards called his own number on a misdirection run around the right side to give the Fighters a one-touchdown lead. The Wranglers wasted no time in responding when Kettle drilled a 26-yard scoring strike to Ryan Wisniewski. On the ensuing drive, Edwards tossed a bomb to the end one only to be intercepted by Travion Banks of the Fighters. The Wranglers could not take advantage of the interception, however, as they turned the ball over on downs at Frisco's two-yard line. Edwards' rughed around the left side for an eight-yard touchdown to extend the Fighters' lead to 20-12 with 27.8 seconds remaining. Conor Mangan's 30-yard field goal as time expired left Frisco with a 20-15 lead at intermission.
Northern Arizona received the opening kickoff of the second half, but turned the ball over on downs at midfield. Edwards scored his fourth rushing touchdown on the night with a three-yard run behind the left guard. The Wranglers drove down to the Fighters four-yard line, but once again turned the ball over on downs. Frisco took over deep in its own territory with just under two minutes to go in the third. The Fighters led 27-15 heading into the fourth.
Edwards capped the Frisco drive by rushing nine yards untouched around the left side. The Wranglers' misfortune continued when Jarrod Ware, Jr. fumbled in Frisco territory and was recovered by the Fighters Royce See. Northern Arizona got the ball right back when Daniel Wright of the Wranglers recovered Edward's fumble at Frisco's 13. Nick Watson entered the game in place of Kettle and threw a 13-yard strike to Wisniewski with 5:26 remaining. The Wranglers tried the onside kick, but it was recovered by Charles Williams of the Fighters. Bryce Crawford knocked through a 21-yard field goal to increase Frisco's lead to 37-21 with 2:42 to go. The Wranglers weren't done. Watson hit Chiaokhiao-Bowman for an eight-yard touchdown with 50 seconds left. They went for the two-point conversion, converting on Watson's pass to Wisnewski to make it an eight-point game. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Frisco's Michael LoVett. The Fighters ran out the clock to preserve the final margin.
Edwards finished seven of 13 for 72 yards and an interception. He made his mark on the ground, rushing for 37 yards off 13 carries to go with his quintet of touchdowns. Carter's 126 yards came off 19 carries. Jerminic Smith caught six passes for 61 yards. Charles Williamd and Royce see led the Fighters defense with seven and six tackles, respectively, and See had four tackles for loss.
Kettle went six of 22 for 76 yards with two touchdowns, while Watson completed two of six passes for 21 yards and two scores. Wisniewski caught two passes for 49 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Chiaokhiao-Bowman caught four balls for 40 yards and two scores. Tramond Lofton finished with nine tackles and JaQuan Artis added seven for the Wranglers defense.
Frisco finished with 230 yards to Northern Arizona's 86. The Fighters had a 167-yard advantage on the ground and the Wranglers had a 25-yard edge in the passing game.
